I see what you mean, and I've ran seasons where I've averaged 25 a week in season before after a good base of around 55-60 last winter.
But personally, I'm just aerobically weak compared to my peers. Running fast over short distances was never too much of a problem for me whereas the 5k was a struggle every time.
In season I'm just doing like 55-60 once I'm healthy again and there's no snow every few days, but honestly one of the other reasons I like to run up to 70 is just that it's fun, nothing I like more than cranking out doubles and really closing out the last few miles of a solid run
