Looking for advice to go from my PR of 17:23 (Summer 2018) to sub 17 this spring over the 5k. Most recently I've run a 5k in 17:40 on what was essentially marathon training (only got one crack at a 5k this summer). I bumped my mileage up to around 60 mpw and topped out at 65 between April and November of 2020. Some notable workouts included:
- 8x800m @ 2:40 w/ 2:30 rest
- 5x1000m @ 3:30 w/ 3:00 rest
- 16 mi in 6:56 feeling comfortable
- 5k race in 17:40 w/ neg. splits up 5:48, high 5:30s, mid 5:30s
- Continuous workout of 800s in avg of 2:48 and floats in 3:18 avg (full 4 mi total 24:40s)
- 4xmile in 5:50 w/ 60s rest
- Tempos on Treadmills of 4-5 w/ averages in the 6:10s
A couple questions I had were:
1. Should I bump up my mileage or keep it at 60-65? I responded well moving from 40-50 to this range but I'm not sure if it's worth going higher.
2. Should I use my 17:40 as a VDOT benchmark and use that to dictate training and is it worthwhile to use goal 5k pace for workouts? Or do I just stick with current pace? Hard to say if I am moving the the right direction without races.
3. Is it worth incorporating time trials? I have never run time trials well, but in the age of Covid, might be worth looking into shorter distance time trials (800-3k) in preparation for a fast 5k.
4: Do you think this makes sense?:
6-8 weeks of base: Hills, tempos, 200s and 300s for basic speed
6 weeks of: Tempos, 800-1000m at 5k pace work, 200-400m for speed
6 weeks of hitting V02 max hard: 800-1600m @ 5k-->3k pace, 400-600m 3k--->mile pace
3-4 weeks of sharpening
I REALLY want to attack sub 17 under and am open to all advice! Thank you!
