It's not that you offload the responsibility for failure to someone else. The point is that your running - win, lose, of draw - is in the service of some higher purpose outside yourself. Steve Magness has written about this. It may not be God, it may be just your country or school or something else, but having an external higher purpose is common to many of the most successful athletes.
If you think it is that simple, then you don't understand basic human psychology my friend and especially that of an elite runner.
Oh, there's quite a bit more to it than that, but you really should read Magness. He's studied it in the context of athlete athletics and sketches it all out pretty clearly. Read Peak Performance, or the blog posts leading up to it.

My bad. I guess it was over your head and you didn't catch the sarcasm. I was referencing his profile pic which shows Ed with a moustache just like Jared Ward. Yes, Ed is a devout LDS member and even served a two year church mission in Spain.
