I read the question asking myself what this song was. I am over 40 and not a music ignorant, far from it. But I never heard of this song. So, I listened to it. And the answer to the question is quite obvious now: no. Not only can we not agree easily about it being the best song ever, but even can't we hardly agree ! In fact, it is not even among the best 1000 songs ever. I listened to it twice to make sure it was not a particulary good song. It is not. It is not a hasard if I had never heard about it before today despite a pretty good musical knowledge.

Sir, I am sorry to inform you that you are indeed a "music ignorant," at least when it comes to rock music. This is one step away from not knowing who Jimi Hendrix is.
There is no "best song," but Free Bird is an all-time great one. The ballad portion is beautiful and measures up to other slower classics like Wild Horses or Wish You Were Here. Then it shifts into some of the most energetic and iconic guitar soloing of all time. It kicks ass and will continue to do so for decades to come.
If I never heard 'Free Bird', 'Simple Man', or 'Tuesday's Gone' ever again I would be fine with that.
A common consensus among songwriters is that God Only Knows by the Beach Boys is the gold standard. There is a reason the BBC spent millions showcasing that song -simply fantastic - and I am not a fan of the Beach Boys

Heck, there is even a burrito chain named after the song! You obviously don't live in TX or CA.
I don't think it's rated in the top 50 by Rolling Stone. Good song though. Top 100 for sure.
Can't co-sign. Good tune no doubt, but overplayed and like Stairway, a no go. Denied.

#193 in Rolling Stone's original 500 greatest songs of all time. Top 50 easily.

No. I can think of many dozens of songs I would rather hear.

RS is a fish-wrap. It's the runner's world of rock and roll for the dumb, consuming masses who want a feel good headline and a picture. Look no further than it's top 50 list of drummers (or any instrument for that matter). Opinions aside, the mag has zero credibility with anyone who knows rock and roll.

Surprised to read that any adult knowledgeable about music never heard the song. For decades people have yelled "play Freebird" during concerts whether seriously or jokingly. It is an iconic ballad and guitar song. In the late 70s and 80s if you were a guitarist you learned it.

I don’t care for Freebird, but if you’ve never heard about it before, then you are indeed ignorant.
Freebird is so popular that it is a very common joke for some fan to yell, “Freebird,” as a song request at concerts. This happens at almost every concert regardless of who the band is.
Admitting that you’ve never heard of Freebird is not far off from saying that you’ve never heard of Star Wars, Kanye West, or Donald Trump. You may not like those things, but if you haven’t even heard of them, then you are definitely ignorant.
Never heard of Freebird?
My goodness . . . my mother always said "If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all." So with that, I'm going to remain silent.

You spent a half hour listening to a terrible song you hate?
Here's my new favorite version of it. Good to see classical music being passed on to the younger generations.
It was always our last tune at Miami University XC parties back in the 70's. Wahy better than Piano Man and dropping trou.
