    Feeling pretty good about my progress so far (Let me quickly knock on wood). My coach had me do a 40-minute run today with 8 x 80m strides in the middle to break things up. His biggest charge to me, whenever I do these, is to keep them "smooth and controlled" and to not worry about pace, because I get caught up in that too much with everything I do. I did them as he asked, felt "smooth and controlled" & checked out the paces when I got home - 4:56/mi, 4:54/mi, 4:48/mi, 4:54/mi, 4:44/mi, 4:48/mi, 4:50/mi, 4:48/mi.

    Allen - Thank you, my friend. Yes, the competitive fire is still there. Knowing that I can hold on for so long at the end of a marathon has given me something of a new perspective on things. Recovery week has gone well. It has been mostly rest. Took five days off.

    How has your week gone? Got home a short while ago and am having some apothic white...

    Just one run again this week. After four weeks of this, fitness finally took a big tumble.

    7.7 miles tonight ... a "negative progression run" as I gradually faded to 9:30 pace. Ha! Only four weeks ago, sub-8 pace for 12 miles. Probably another crazy work week, then time to rebuild, my friend! Onward and upward.

    Local IPA a moment ago as I drank the last of my beer. Somehow went through a six-pack in less than two weeks! Gonna hook up with my sons tomorrow -- they turned 33 yesterday. So more beer then. :)

    Thinking about another marathon. A few years ago I went sub-3:30 on three-day-a-week training. Maybe sub 3:45 on the same plan next year? No shame in that!

    Hey OR, regarding today's effort, I'm reminded that immediately prior to the run I spent six straight hours hauling, splitting (by hand), and stacking firewood. Only about three face cords, but my old man back is killing me. Well, I've had this old man back since my 20s, so no surprise!

    Allen - Enjoy the time with your sons and happy birthday to them. Sounds like you have been hard at work. I say go for it in the marathon. You have a great passion for that event...and so do I. It is like no other event, in any sport.

    Ain't that the truth.

    For one thing, what other individual event can you spend countless hours preparing for that has no reliable way to predict the outcome? So many things can positively or negatively impact the outcome. Course elevation profile, wind, temperature, humidity, too much fuel, too little fuel, quality of competition, proper / improper tapering, going out too hard, going out too slow, drafting possibilities, navigating turns (pin-point or otherwise), conservation of energy and HEART. That is to name a few.

    I just wish it was more exciting to watch so that it would capture the imagination of others. Rarely have I seen a marathon broadcast in which there was an exciting finish. In today's society of low attention spans, it's difficult to get someone excited about that when they have 24/7 coverage of high drama, fast action football and basketball.
