Congrats to the soph....
Tom Graves ran 14:18 for 3 miles as a soph at DetweillerPark in IL CC state championships. He was 3rd.
The weather was raining and muddy in patches, and veterans of the sport said it cost the runners 10-15 seconds, so 10 seconds for sure.
That's about 14:08 as a soph. 1st and 2nd place would have been close to breaking 14 min on a dry course, and two runners below 14 in the same race has never happened at the IL state meet.
As a junior, in cold weather (before running tights, etc.), Graves only ran 14:08.
In better weather (and with the top rated team allowed to run) Graves would break 14 as a junior. Only Craig Virgin has done that.
If this soph runs 14:45 or faster for 5k CC, then I would notice...not that he cares.
