What would be the argument for adding a track and cross country program to a d1 college like Clemson.
What would be the argument for why they should spend money to create one?
I have yet to hear a good one. Because they should. It’s a shame. Remember, there’s a history doesn’t count.
If there’s no good argument to add one, then we should expect most of them to go away.
Maybe that most track athletes pay tuition and the school isn’t at capacity.
Extra ciriculars like track offer value as part of a tertiary academic experience and teach things not available in the classroom.
There is the argument for adding quality students through walk on spots as well.
Ultimately it comes down to whether one feels a university should do more than a) make money b) be a degree mill C) how valuable is putting all the money in the world into football.
A lot of schools have lost respectability academically as they've cut sports programs. A roster spot attracts a student with good grades who, if he can't play his sport in the ncaa will just go to duke for the academics.
