Football players could have these programs reinstated by tomorrow afternoon by refusing to get on the plane for South Bend.

I couldn't tell that they hadn't already done so based on how they haven't shown up at NCAA regionals the past two decades.

I never want to hear that Division 1 runners who receive a bit of free gear are washed up ever again.

They pay Dabo 9 million a year, could they pay him 7 and have track and XC, you bet they could, but they won't.
They could pay him less but there would be at least 10 SEC schools and 5 Big 10 schools lined up at his door to hire him away.
It is so sad because of the total mismanagement of extra funds over the years. Extravagant and needless spending on everything football. Yeah, football brings in money. But these guys don’t need all of this nonsense. Unfortunately there is nothing the NCAA or any AD without balls can do about it.
When you have a football team that is bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars per year and you cut men's track and xc, which are exceedingly inexpensive sports and far better for health, then you just don't know what you're doing. The way they fund things at universities in separate baskets (athletics budget is separate from academic budget), there is no justification for this. They wanted them done just to add even more to football, more mini-golf or buffet offerings or goody bags. Just senseless.

Athletic Director Dan Radakovich who also drove Georgia Tech's program into the ground, now attempting to do the same thing at Clemson. But thank goodness they added a softball team.
Clemson has 72 women rowers on roster.
https://clemsontigers.com/sports/rowing/roster/Some football powers want to have 150 players on roster.
Surprised men's tennis survived. Clemson also has men's soccer.....a very successful program.
Can you really have men's football AND men's soccer?

True, but that would require the football players to actually think and act. Most don't really care as long as their program is safe.
Sad day for Clemson. I suspect that the AD was given this assignment to cut sports and found this was the best way to go. Just watch, more cuts to T&F/XC coming soon to a D1 school near YOU!
Wow. Big news when the biggest, most profitable and successful NCAA Division I football program can't fund sports.
Clemson was one of my five recruiting trips when deciding on college and I only went because their coach, Bob Pollock, wanted me on the team.
Such great facilities and such great history. I had such great battles with their guys over the years.
Perhaps it will be reinstated.

This is about will, not ability.
Someone in the media needs to cover this. Talk about disenfranchising kids, this takes the cake. Talk about inequity, this takes the cake. Sickening.
Track and field and Cross Country should be club sports as there is no fan base.

I agree. The school could still accept students who run club track, have a well rounded student body. Track/XC doesn't need to an NCAA sport at Clemson. Pay club fees, hire a coach. self fund your meet entries or travel if you really want to do it. I don't know why there seems to be some need for colleges to sponsor most sports any more than they sponsor the chess club. I loved my time as an NCAA track athlete, but I don't know if it was appreciably better than if it had just been a club team, enough to be worth for the school to fund it and potentially be liable for it. Heck, I'd think it would be in Clemson's best interest to keep funding it as much as they do, but not have the NCAA looking down on it.

That is insane!!!
Doubtful. Brown is in the Northeast. Clemson is in South Carolina. Not exactly the capital state of diversity.
This has nothing to do with Title IX, nothing to do with COVID, nothing to do with revenues being down, nothing to do with football coaches salaries, and nothing to do with football facilities. It has everything to do with Radakovich. He was not directed by anyone to do this. He has been waiting for the right time to do it. Remember when he fired Boogie Johnson for some minor violations? That wasn't about violations. That was about Boogie building by far the most successful program at Clemson. Radakovich had to weaken the program so that he could justify cutting it when the opportunity came. Never ever trust Dan Radakovich.
So why is it that XC/TF programs have survived for decades and only now we have this wave of cuts? What changed?
It's got to be financial, but XC/TF have always cost money. They never funded themselves. So what's different? I suspect that XC/TF budgets have grown disproportionately over the past few decades, but I don't know this for sure. Does anyone have data?

College football is all about recruiting. Can you imagine being a top high school recruit and taking a tour of the Clemson's football facilities in that video? Holy cow, that's impressive. Do the other big name schools have similar facilities?
Good . Put the money towards Men's Golf.
Focus...all this is about is Dan Radakovich raising his salary (#1) and diverting what is left to football (#2) even though football does not need it and is not asking for it. Clemson , with a budget comparable to SEC schools, will now sponsor 16 sports, the NCAA minimum. IF Radakovich could cut more sports, he would. He does not care about opportunities for young people. He does not care about diversity. He does care about his money, and what is left that he can divert to football.
