I used to enjoy running workouts on the track in the dark when I lived near a public one.
Not a fun option but a treadmill either on your own or at a gym
Parking lots at big box stores, malls, etc?
this and this wrote:Although it feels like you are running faster in the dark, I find that I usually run a bit slower in the dark than I would in the light at the same effort level. So if you really want to run fast at night find a well lit area.
This has been my experience as well. I don't worry about it and just chalk it up to running at night.
After checking a track to make sure it is free of any obstacles, usually stuff left behind from other users/team sports, I tend to run just to the right of the lane marker as it is white and stands out well in the dark.
You can access an airport runway!? How!?
Most of my runs are often early in the morning when it's dark. HS track is just over a mile away so works as good warm-up and cool-down. I use a small flashlight and reflective shirt.
One thing you could consider if you goto a track, goto a hardware store and buy a handful of chem-lights (cheap), which will glow plenty around the perimeter of the track. At least that will give you some reference on the borders......just an idea.
You can tell its daylight savings. I ran on an army base that had parts that were open. Because of security, it was incredibly well lit and there was little speeding. I waved to the gate guards every night.
My only real fear of running now in the dark is frost/black ice. A thin cool frost and the asphalt roads are slippery. I've gone down and had some road rash making turns crossing the roads etc.
I find my eyes adjust pretty well without lights. I only bring a headlamp if I'm running trails (though some times have gone full blackness - it's an interesting spooky feeling).
The track is pretty good - lots of light pollution that an open area like that is lit enough. Sometimes people bring their stupid dogs to run on the inner field though or walk in lane one - fluck 'em.
My club used to do a track session at night once in a while, just for fun. The track we used was pretty dark but we'd put lanterns on the inside of the curb around both curves. Man I miss those days!
I do my workouts around the outer perimeter of a mall parking lot. 1.5 mile loop, completely flat with no sharp turns or obstacles. Super well lit and very little traffic while the stores are closed.
I do all my running between 3-5am without a headlamp. I run in paved trails and roads for anything up to T pace and usually take tempo and interval work to the track. Agree to run a lap on the track first to make sure there is nothing on it.
I have never sprained an ankle or run into anything and injured myself. Shouldn’t have said that...
