Racing is no pleasure for me. I am totally lacking aggression toward race competitors. Stopped any championships 15 years ago. Sometimes, I like the idea of clocking a distance for being proud about my performance.

All of that jive about, heel striking, midfoot striking and all associated crap. "How do I become a ___ striker?" "What shoes should I buy if I'm a ____ striker?"
Just put on ya damn shoes and run.
Running. I don’t even run anymore. I follow the sport and have been a reg here for 20+ years!(a staggering statistic!) I just like the company and all the talk here does remind me of the pointless things we would talk about on training runs. Nowadays I just walk and listen to music.
Thanks to the Brojos and Co for creating this place to nerd out to distance running.

Yeah, I thought that too until I (A) had kids and (B) reached 40.
Things I still don't care one lick about are:
Marathons or marathon training. Running becomes destructive and pointless and bad for your well being at some distance. That distance is anything >13.1 miles, imo. And one lifetime half is enough for me.
Cool downs, not saying they're useless, I'm just not interested. And they're almost useless.
"Warming up" OR "Cooling down" from a standard everyday run.
Pilates. Whatever that is.
Stretching before a run. Or after. I do stretch occasionally though, in the evening usually.
International t&f. Just don't care. Don't know the names of most of the current champions. Don't watch the OG or WC on TV. One can't know until ten years later (or whatever the SOL is for retesting samples) who actually won an event. Some sport.
And this comes from someone who began coaching 40+ years ago (and is still at it) and started t&f/xc programs at three major universities along the way.
The Stick, Foam Rollers and that whole 'roll it out' nonsense.
Heart rate
How do I strike
How many miles I have run in a week/month/year
How many marathons I have run
I have thought of another.
Online training diaries. I stuck to a notepad diary. Just always my preferred thing. Remember carting them all over to my coach's house one time.
Running with music, and GPS.
I guess it goes to show how different our internal conceptions of running are.
I can't think of anything worse than running with music. What am I trying to distract myself from?! I've never done it, not once.
I used to do the GPS thing but got too obsessed with quantifying the experience. I myself get far greater enjoyment out of running what seems a good pace, along regular routes I pick arbitrarily.
Ditto the whole Strava thing. I can see why some people love it, I can't think of anything I'd want to do less
Marathons. A stupid distance . Spending ages training for one or 2 races a year seems supremely silly when you're not a pro-runner. It also ties into this fascination people have with always running longer. No, why don't you try being fast for once.
Lifting : For the average runner it is way too overstressed and for most people I believe is a waste of time. Maximize your mileage (Comfortably) and get in hill sprints and strides and your pretty much covered.
Stretching /Those boot things/ ice baths Same as lifting.
Training Jargon Talking about labeling things as CV, Vo2, Low heart run yada yada....
Zone training... Enough said.
Low drop shoes to run in a more "natural" way? Like some shoe lines are so low and mighty, they don't even have a shoe with a drop! So you can strain your calves from here to Sunday!
American runners. They pretty well all suck in distance running. (and I'm an American) Butt I do like them bun huggers on the middle distance girls! :)0 Did you see that!
Wearing a GPS on every damn run!
High mileage for a 3-4hr recreational marathoner. Really?
Ultra running. Jogging, walking, talking, eating. No wonder women like to do these. :)
Marathon racing. Half is all you need.
Big races. Get bussed and huddle in a cold corral for 1-2 hrs. Yeah! Really want to do this.
Diamond League. NCAA XC. Sprinting.
Big two for me:
Heart rate training - worthless over complication
Strava - why am I supposed to care what my neighbors 3 mile jog time was

I'll take the gift card or whatever the age group prize but anyone bragging about winning the 40-45 age group when they came in 25th behind a bunch of 20 and 30 somethings is a huge tool.

I don't usually run with music for a number of reasons, but I will say that I enjoy pairing a long run with a highly anticipated new album. It is one of my favorite things to do. It has nothing to do with distraction. In fact, it is the exact opposite. I can focus on the music better when I run, and running takes me to a place where I can enjoy things in a more primal manner. I feel closer to God when I run, for instance.
But to your point, a run with music is more about the music and less about the training. I do not listen to music when I train.
Warming up- I know it is necessary but I'd rather just go about my business.
