UMKC dropped both track and cross for both men and women, effective Nov.1. All coaches let go. Cannot believe there is zero headline on LR about this travesty. This is another D1 program that suffers an unneeded fate.

i didn't think the way they worded their official statement made any sense. Something like they would brings these programs back If...blah blah blah.
yea right.
if you are in financial trouble, and this is a temporary thing, it would make more sense to just cut back on travel, meets etc. especially now during a pandemic (which is what most school are doing anyway). to cut everything only to have to rehire an rescholarship etc, would be very cumversome. clearly they are just using the pandemic as an excuse to cut some programs. It might make more sense to cut all programs by X % than what have done.
I hate that. Lots of other changes they could have tried if they intend to bring it back. Lots of short-sighted management in universities.
Too bad. Boise State hosted the NCAA Division I Indoor and community hosted USATF Masters Indoor, while BSU and local colleges hosted a variety of meets over the last decade. Now after receiving a large donation to buy the track from the Georgia Dome, Boise State is trying to sell the track for $350,000. The local donor is pissed off, and Stacy Dragila is heading a group that hopes to keep the track in the community. Sign of the times.

Mike I am not sure you know what the word travesty means, but you are far from alone in this regard. It is too bad that this keeps happening at schools but it appears that this trend is far from over.

They will have to bring back quite a few of the sports cut, as they are well below the minimum required sports required by the NCAA. They will likely be allowed to keep these sports cut for the time being, but after two years will have to bring them back.
They probably saw what W&M girls team did so just cut both teams to prevent that
Rumor (and just a rumor) is that they have discussed bringing back just Men's and Women's XC, but not track to get back to the sport sponsorship need of 14. I believe I read they are at 12 after the cuts/suspensions, 14 is the required # for DI membership.
As always, cut the sports that promote lifelong health in favor of football, which wrecks body and mind, and skews the gender breakdown for all of college sports with up to 110 on scholarship. As for the language of suspension, it's likely intended as a furlough, which allows universities in some circumstances to not pay their employees with no grievance process for an extended time without having to rehire them and incur costs and difficulty if funds are restored after the recession, which currently is close to the 2008 recession with a 3.5% overall drop in GDP this year and very high unemployment claims (new ones typically running at 800,000 per week).

UMKC doesn’t have football
UMKC has 7 sports remaining after cutting men's golf and 6 sports associated with Track and Field. They will need to add at least 3 back to be a NCAA D2 school and all of them back once the NCAA rescinds the waiver allowing a school to drop below 14.
Mike Lundgren, the thread creator, claimed that all the coaches are being let go. Is there any proof of that? From what I can see, it's just a suspension of the programs.
Please post proof or at least tell us where you got that information.
Let's be real, the U of Missouri programs aren't getting it done in the men's programs. UMKC produced Frerichs and Mizzou produced Schweitzer. Any guys at that level in the past decade? Nope.
Bret Guemmer the distance coach posted on his instagram about him being let go. Guemmer has done a good job with the womens program for what little resources they have.
The best distance program in missouri for the men isnt even a d1 team..
MIZZOU athletes
Ever heard of Christian Cantrell? Derrick Peterson?

I believe you mean Christian Cantwell
I wonder if they will use the entirety of the 2 year waiver for sport sponsorship before bringing it back; just 7 sports is almost non-existent. Either way, very unfair to the students and coaches to make this decision mid-school year when the athletes all have limited options.

Bryce Miller (UMKC) was 7th in the Olympic Trials in 2016 in the Steeple Chase.
Not OP, but this is what one of the coaches that was let go told us directly.

Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
