Cool.
I only ran CC for the team to win, and at state to win or nearly win.
When I ran only for myself--such as my senior year w/o sports so I ran Junior Olympic CC--I was as good as anyone running that crap, but I didn't care.
So, I don't think the abbreviated CC season is a problem for the runner. He is 800, and it could help him not to focus too much on CC.
One workout that another HS runner did (I tried it a couple of times in college) was 100 x 100. He ran very fast for the 800 and 1600 in HS, but was not on our team. He also ran fast for HS CC, in fact we usually battled each other when he was a senior and I was a junior.
I ran it on a football field, with a jog behind the goal posts, or the goal if a soccer field.
Even 50 x 100 is a great workout.
I would run it by combining different 100 workouts from HS, such as 20 x 200 (5 x 20 sec, 5 x 18 sec, 5 x 16 sec, 5 x 14 sec) or 32 x 200 (10 at 2 mile, 4 at mile, 4 at 400, 4 at 800, 20 at 3 mile).
Just a thought from an 800 runner.
