Who got Covid on Bowerman?

So you noticed no names were mentioned. Here's the deal. I posted this on the thread about the Michigan relay but, surprisingly, didn't get replies from those who agreed. I assumed that would be most of the Board, as I thought many were in agreement here.

They were never considering the relay. BTC showing up for that is so far from the realm of possibility that Hanson thought Jerry was pulling his leg. He was. They are interested in Olympics and World Championships. That's it. There are other races you have to do to get there. USATF, for example. You need a qualifying time for both the National meet and the big one. So one could get away with attending 3 events in a championship year. A few more actual races, since there will be rounds at the second 2.

These runners don't just randomly show up to races that can't in any way lead to an international medal. It is huge news when any show up to USATF XC. They certainly don't consider Club Cross, which is a step down in prestige but not a huge jump. It is not just a bunch of joggers, but it is not the very top level of the sport, is it? Inthe same way, CIM, Grandma's, or Houston are a step down from Boston. They don't consider these events. They wouldn't do a random Rock 'n' Roll event somewhere. Never have. Never will. It would be somewhat newsworthy if any showed up to USATF Outdoors on the 'off year' in an Olympic cycle.

So, as various observers and posters may have noticed, the Michigan thing was full of a motley crew of semi-pros. Sure, a few fairly big-time runners were there, NAZ not the least of them. A real nerd knew all of their names and half the others. If Jerry's Kids ain't in Monaco, they most certainly aren't at this. It isn't even close to fitting their agenda. So, you asked who has Covid. Do any of them?

Well said. Nobody likely got covid. If you read their carefully worded excuse. What a bunch of wankers.

Here's how I weigh the possibilities:

80% - just a Jerry excuse

19% - someone who knows someone who works at Nike tested positive for covid, and everybody they've made eye contact with or been within a 500 foot radius of in the last month "needs to quarantine"

1% - an actual covid outbreak

So what's Schumacher's masterplan for announcing BTC was going, then pulling out at the last minute? And why start this plan of entering then pulling out last minute now when traditionally if Jerry/BTC haven't wanted to do a race, they simply don't do it.

Occam's razor: - one person got covid (or their partner perhaps?) out of a group of 25 people living in the county with the highest number of covid rates in the state, forcing the whole team to wait and get tested before travelling. If it was someone's partner that might also explain why no names being given. OR - Jerry registered a team, picked legs etc, then pulled out last minute just for fun?

Anyway, came on for gossip sharing - my Beaverton running friend was at the Nike track and he said he saw Centro/Sean working out together, and Colleen and someone he didn't recognize (purple hair??) working out as well. If they're working out in pairs/small groups that actually might suggest the covid story is legit. But hey, that's all I got to contribute.

Minor point but BTC did do club cross a while back when Sammy Silva was on the team. Every once in a while they do random stuff.

I do honestly think they were going to do this and then yes, Covid.

Hopefully none of them. It could wipe out the whole team. Time to shut it all down. Running isn't worth risking lives. Anyone with any knowledge of what the science is saying otherwise? Crazy.

This guy could be right. I mean, I weighed in. I think it was just an excuse, but I guess there are other possibilities. To those of who ask why don't they just ignore the whole existence of the event (like they do with major road races and usually even USATF XC), I have to say it's hard to guess. On the thread about the event I suggested it was just to get some press, as opposed to none. After all, they were discussed leading up to it and are still now. For those who think any press is good press (Nike) that could be it.

A good, well-deserved jab. I have no problem with setting your sights high, but if you can't pull it off, isn't it worth taking a look at something less than Gold Medals? All the more reason I - and a lot of people, apparently - ridicule their lack of racing. Instead of making Tokyo your entire be-all end-all and then striking out even getting there (which many of the team will do) you could enter a race - and maybe even win some - once in a while. Did someone's mention they were at Club Cross once? That must have been a good while ago; it was shocking they showed up - once - to National Championship Cross in recent years. If you win a random Rock 'n' Roll half or something, hey, that's not an Olympic medal, but you can look back on the year with some nostalgia I suppose. Otherwise, for many of them, we're looking at a 4 year block of not making teams, and for a few, making teams but not getting medals. Seems to me less of a bummer to go and win the Michigan Ekiden. At least that's something!
