Hi, thanks for the time in advance,
Recently I've started playing soccer each week with friends for about 2 hours, it's been making my legs ache but that's probably because I just started, sadly, my track workouts with my team are starting up next week from 5-6, then I have soccer at 6, I'm worried that this will be way too hard on my body especially as I'm a relatively low mileage runner (30miles). Should I just say no to soccer which I enjoy playing with them a lot (can't change date/time).
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
I second the coach’s advice. My kid tried to do both freshman year and was always either sick, injured, or flat out fatigued. I would first recommend doing what you enjoy the most, followed by what you are best at. If you choose soccer, give your commitment to that and maybe see if the track coach will just let you show up for Sat meets and race. Take Sun off completely. Otherwise, commit to track, and maybe just play one pick up soccer game per week for fun & lateral movement.
My experience was that soccer got in the way of track for my kid. Plus, it was way more political and a lot of the kids weren’t in shape and had to commit (financially & physically) to a team sponsor’s fitness outlet. It was so dumb. Seemed obvious to me to just cut the kids who were obviously not putting the time in on their own.
