Um it matters for both? You can visually see the rods because they are physically too close to the bottom of the shoe. What that means is that they are very exposed to potentially many things that could break them at any time (a rock, the edge of a crack, edge of sidewalk) - things you run over all the time that you don't even think about.
If a rod breaks the performance is compromised and longevity ends. The example of veins and skin is silly. Would you be happy with veins bulging out of you skin if you worked a job where you constantly got little nicks/scratches/cuts on your skin?
