Most people aren't that worried about Covid and just want to get back to life. But when pollsters ask they say they support the lockdowns and distancing laws because they don't want to look like heartless people who want to "kill grandma."

You can support distancing but not want a lockdown. You can support wearing a mask and want gyms, movie theaters and restaurants to open up. You can want to get back to life but still be concerned with covid.
The only things closed are things most people won't do anyway. You could allow theatres to open. Ain't nobody going to go.

"People don't think like I want them to -- so they must be lying and actually agree with me!"
Clever

Well, there are other categories:
Democrat politicians who want lockdowns because they want to control people, want to drive the small businesses under, and especially like to shut down Christian churches.
Democrat voters who feel safe and cozy when government tells them what to do.
Democrat voters who love to signal how much that they “believe in science”. So they wear a mask driving their car, alone.
The elections will be a quasi referendum on covid. I think you will see Trump/republicans do better than the polls indicate.

The public supports COVID measures taken by more than the standard political divide? Why do you think there is going to be such a dramatic error?

Why do you think there was such a dramatic error in November of 2016?
A 2016-level polling error still means Trump loses by 3-4 in Pennsylvania and 4-6 in Wisconsin at this stage.
Regarding the actual topic of interest, I actually somewhat agree with the idea at hand. There is a political correctness element to just surrendering to fear and distrusting vaccines and tacitly saying you want to be locked down until 2022, which, to me, in plainly ridiculous, and won’t hold in practice even if that is the letter of the law.

It wasn't that dramatic. Popular vote was nearly right on the money. There was some bad errors in specific states but it wasn't the total disaster some like to make it out to be.
Besides look at this NPR poll:
75% of people support mask mandates in states. That's not something a polling error is going to flip.

No sh1t Sherlock. That is like saying most people want lower taxes and a great social safety net. What people want is often not realistic you moron.

Schools?
Gyms?
Restaurants?
Indoor playgrounds?
Propaganda works.
What restrictions do you want to relax? Most place have indoor dining, no restrictions on which business can be open?
Ah I see. You want to force people to as physically social they were before! Makes sense, bro.
Masks are fine. Distancing is fine. Shutting down businesses is asinine (like what the IDIOT governor of Pennsylvania did).

I'd like gatherings of more than 5 to be allowed again.

I was also planning to visit family in New York, which requires anyone entering to quarantine for 14 days. Perhaps people aren't actually following that.
You really want strangers to stand closer together ?
There is not one restriction out there now that affects any decisions I want to make for myself.
You people who have supported lockdowns for months and have been champions of hysteria are sociopaths- you are sick narcissists.
