This is about the world half marathon championships and in Poland commentary by Tim Hutchings with Mara Yamauchi.
British athletics commentator, Tim Hutchings, keeps on making mistakes about statistics and athletes and countries. it’s like he’s almost not paying attention to who the runners are.
In the women’s race for example, Hutchings commented that there were three Portuguese runners coming in quick succession, (three female Mexican runners finished within three seconds of each other with 1:10:19, 1:10:21, and 1:10:22 and following in quick succession) when in fact they were not Portuguese but Mexican runners and it was easy to see but apparently not to Hutchings. He also made other numerous mistakes too numerous to mention.
It seems that in track and field and running in general there are so many commentators who get it wrong compared to other professional sports like basketball, soccer and baseball for example where if the commentators made mistakes like that they would soon be out of a job. Sorry for the pessimism. I’m sure Tim has other qualities, but attention to detail is obviously not one of them.
For those too young to know, Tim is a former world-class athlete from Great Britain who ran 1311 for 5000 m on the track and also finished second in the world cross country championships, in Stavanger, Norway many decades ago.
