Jornet FTW in 25:59, looking relaxed.
Jakob beats Kilian by 1 minute here but Kilian beats Jakob by 20 minutes at Sierre Zinal. Who would you pick as your favorite runner? Who's the more worthy runner?
Judging from Instagram, Kilian is still spending all his time up in the mountains. Doesn't seem like he is prioritising flat running or speed sessions at all. If he finishes in under 30 minutes or within 90 seconds of Jakob it shows that he is truly the GOAT runner
Let me get this straight: if KJ only gets beat by 90 seconds then he is the GOAT? If KJ runs a 10K only a little slower than Zola Budd did, then he is the GOAT? If KJ runs a 10K only 90 seconds slower than the high school record, then he is the GOAT? If KJ runs a 10K only 30 seconds slower than what he posts as his workout time, then he is the GOAT? If KJ runs a 10K fast enough to make the JV team at some DI schools, then he is the GOAT?
I’m giving the nod to Killian.
I expect Canada to chime in on the thread with an extreme tangent about Matt Carpenter and pikes peak.
Jakob is flat out champion.
Pun intended.

They are “squaring off” the same way Rupp and Walmsley “squared off” in the Olympic Trials marathon.
They are just in the same event...they are not 'squaring off', he is not racing a similar athlete.

I know this was sort of a troll attempt, but FYI, Kilian has been doing road training like 5 days per week this year to prepare for a road marathon this fall.
I'd guess he will be flirting with 28:40ish for a flat road 10k.
Can't wait for the photo we get from the startline with these two guys next to each other for a second or two.
KJ will see JI only at start and finish.
Such a weird framing with the headline, then going through their credentials, and then saying it won't be a contest. At least they got it right by the end. Some A1 click bait.
In all seriousness, I'm intrigued just to see what a top ultra guy can run at a classic road race distance. Maybe sub-29? Over/under ~ 1:00 from Jakob.
Jim put together a solid outing at the Trials against marathon specific guys. Then some decent triathletes ran sub-14 for 5k on the roads, 28's for 10k, during this pandemic. I would guess a top ultra guy can run something similar. Athletes like that tend to be a punch line around here but I'm impressed with their speed/endurance combo. Obviously, they would have stuck to T&F if they were a fraction of a percent better, but there's something to be said for how good these guys are at endurance events & how they still have some really decent leg speed.

Kilian never did T&F in the first place. He was a pure mountain athlete all his life . If he can rock up to his first ever flat road race at 32 years of age, with zero track background and with a huge amount of wear and tear in his body from decades of dominating 100 mile ultras, and still finish within a minute of Jakob, then it shows he has god given talent. Much more natural ability than his teenage competitor this weekend

He won't be anywhere near Jakob and will only see him at the start as Jakob will have a good two minutes + to clear the finish zone. What an asinine comment to make. The times Jakob has achieved dwarf anything KJ has or will accomplish in running.
oh god no,hes not that fast.35 minutes would be about all he could do,and thats being optimistic.hes an ultra runner, not a 28 minute track runner.
I bet on over 29 and over 90sec after jakob.
Under 27:30 for jakob.

First: They are not going to compete in a T&F event but in a hilly 10k road run (last year it was under cold and rainy conditions) so it is more in an event between Kilian´s and Jakob´s specialities. As you probably know Jakob is at this stage in his career focusing mainly on the 1500m.
Second: You obviously are hoping for a time under 29 for Kilian. I think that can turn out to be very optimistic! As far as I can understand we only have Kilian´s own word for his ability in the 10k and that can show to be not so much (I have done a bit research on the man whom I until recently didn´t know much about having learned that several experts very much doubt Kilian´s claim that he alone conquered Mount Everest twice some years ago).
So when we can assume that Jakob can go under 28 as he did in last years race (his first ever 10k) I won´t be surprised if Kilian can´t break 30.
Third: It is ridiculous to compare a person who have had a long an succesful career in his field with a youngster who is in the beginning of his career. Let at least the youngster finish his physical development before you start to evaluate who is the most talented.
Fourth: When this is said I will inform you that various "negativists" on these pages already some years ago started to compare Jakob with seasoned runners who were in their prime or perhaps already past their prime.
I think one of the first examples was a comparison between Andrew Wheating and Jakob more than 2 years ago when Jakob was only 17. The posters who voted for Wheating already one year later looked like fools and of course even more this year where Jakob in several distances (1500m, 2000m and 3000m) already has run faster than any American (including imported east Africans) ever has done.
As late as in the early season of this year 19 year old Jakob was compared to greats of the past such as Jim Spivey, Sydney Maree and even Said Aouita.
It took only some months before the posters who had been claiming Spivey´s and Maree´s superiority had to sneak away in shame when Jakob had run PB in the above mentioned distances.
And even Aouita is now behind Jakob in the same distances and will probably also be well behind Jakob in the 5000m and all other distances above 1500m as soon as Jakob joins some fast races. If Jakob will get the number of medals in the Olympics and Worlds as the very clever and diversified (but probably also very doped) Aouita did is another story. Only time will tell.
Kilian's latest post says hes been dealing with some injuries while training for this race. Says he hopes he can run around 29:30 which he says is his unofficial PB
Jornet is racing Jakob about as much as I was racing Ritz in a Central Park 10k.
Cool too see and I’m a huge KJ fan. That being said, he shouldn’t be anywhere near JI. Not sure why people hate ultrarunners who try short distances - it’s not like KJ is out there saying he’s gonna win and break 27 or something. Comparing KJ to JI is like comparing Usain Bolt to Kipchoge. Yeah, both runners, but totally different. For some reason a marathon runner is considered a real athlete but an ultramarathoner isn’t and I just don’t get it. Bolt would not do well at a marathon. Kipchoge would not do well in a 100 or 200. Why is it not the same standard for an ultra runner? Of course the best ultra runner isn’t going to be competitive at a 10k, that would be ridiculous. If they spent 20 hours a week training for a 10k instead of trail ultras, they probably would do really well. What’s the hate about?
