There are two parts to this that are missing:
1) Strong recommendation
2) Compliance
The first part (in the US) is simply non-existent, with mixed messaging coming from the top.
The evidence for the second part can be found everywhere, viral videos of individual protests in Walmart, and other public places and also threads like this in letsrun: the strong resistance to obvious and simple measures such as large indoor gatherings and mask wearing, that have worked in other countries.
You may have a point that with a strong and coordinated and consistent and honest messaging from the politicians, as early as January, we could have avoided lockdowns, had less spread (and deaths) with a smaller impact on the economy.
Do we still rely only on the PCR testing to give us cases/deaths? Is there any other metric that is actually reliable, trustworthy?
As it is, PCR testing is a complete clusterfvck.

Sure. The US has not done a great job at containing COVID- although I would argue no similar country of the similar size & population has done great (Brazil, Russia, India, Mexico) Canada has done alright but it’s sparsely populated when compared to the US. Who the hell knows what China is doing/had to do to contain the virus.
But to hold up New Zealand as some model the US can follow is just absurd for all the reasons I stated. Might as well compare the US COVID situation to the COVID situation in the Solomon Islands or Fiji.
Are you really that ignorant? Those nations are tiny countries of a few hundred thousand; New Zealand has a population of 5 million - and is more comparable to Israel, Norway, Belgium, Finland or even Sweden - which is often held up as a model for the US. All have borders which control the flow of visitors - New Zealand is no different. In fact, before Covid it had a considerable annual influx of tourists, which accounts for 20% of it export earnings. The country has earned the accolades of the world's health experts for how it has responded to the pandemic, and recognition from the world's global business leaders. But don't let facts prise you from your ill-informed prejudices. The virus entered the US the same way as it did other countries; its failure has been in its utterly inadequate response once the virus was in the community. It continues to fail.

Oh I'm facing the truth alright- what you support is mass killing- those are facts- here's another "random tweet":
https://twitter.com/justin_hart/status/1316381998345146369Those countries I just named have a much harder time controlling the flow of people in and out of their country because they are on the highly populated continent while New Zealand is located almost 1,000 miles from its next closet neighbor. It’s much easier to isolate yourself from the rest of the world, like NZ has, if you are protected by a thousand miles of water on all sides of you.
Now the reasons I think a comparison between Fiji or the Solomon Islands vs NZ is much more relevant than a comparison of the US vs NZ are:
1) NZ has a much more similar population to the the Solomon Islands or Fiji than to the US (NZ is about X7 more populated than the Solomon Islands or Fiji but the US is about X65 more populated than NZ is)
2) NZ landmass is much more similar in size to Fiji or The Solomon Islands then to the USA
3) NZ is a isolated island nation in Oceania that heavily relays on tourism...just like Fiji and the Solomon Islands. The US does have tourism but it is not an isolated island.
Why am I bringing up these comparison? To try to show COVID numbers are highly relative according to a country’s geographic location and population. The Solomon Islands and Fiji are far out performing New Zealand in COVID (both Fiji and The S. Islands have a lower COVID death count, case count and death per captia count than NZ).
Now when comparing the US to countries who are both more similar landmass size wise and population wise- Brazil, Mexico, Russia, UK- our COVID numbers are not great but the same discrepancy isn’t there when you compare NZ to the US.

Nobody supports mass killings.
Dems don't want mass lockdowns either.
They listen to the CDC and WHO, who are saying lockdowns are not the primary tool to control the spread.
More than 55 million people in seven countries are in desperate need of COVID-19-related famine relief. That is according to a new report from international charity Oxfam, entitled “Later will be too late.” The report details how 55.5 million people in seven countries — Yemen, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Somalia — are living in severe-to-extreme levels of food insecurity or even famine conditions, thanks largely to the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

You are wrong here.
Through one's actions you are supporting policies that do just this. The Dems have indeed supported lockdowns and many of them still do- they may argue about degrees or forms- lockdowns are not simply a universally defined policy. But what all forms of this are is universally devastating particularly to the poor and working class- the very group the Dems claim to support- though many of us know how the Dems in reality abandoned the working class decades ago.
And there are nationally prominent Dems in the fanatical sector like Cuomo, Whitmer, Newsom who threaten more lockdowns and use those threats as a form of political blackmail and coercion.
Anyone in support of any portion of this is part of the problem and directly responsible for the mass loss of life that is occurring.
Viral videos of idiots throwing hissy fits on either side of any issue is not evidence of a widespread problem. Second, if the government forces people to do unusual things that don't make sense they should resist. 3rd your assumption that people writing here against Covid measures do not go along with them anyway is 100% false; My bet is nearly 100% of those against the covid measures in the USA still go along with it, just like the rest of the population who disagrees with it as well. The Nazis have made it very clear they will destroy you if you do not comply, so people are pissed but they go along with the insane stupidity driven and non-scientific bullying of the political left, just to save face and their careers. The problem is that the Covid Nazis believe that since everyone is going along with it that they agree with their false ideals; the reality is most people are just afraid of these psychopaths and just choose to remain silent.

The Dems want and relish lockdowns! Sadly, even some of the Republican governors & mayors like to excercise tyrannical power by locking down businesses. But by far & large, the Democrats have little respect for the Constitution and personal rights:

This was the only state that gyms were allowed to stay open. Kudos to Governor Noem who didn't fall for the phony panic-demic, and actually respected the Constitution and the Bill of Rights!
Sadly, I live in a state with a tyrannical Leftist governor at the helm. We have a stupid statewide mask mandate and all he does is criticize & condemn the residents for the stupid case increases that supposedly is occurring. He now has his finger on the trigger for lockdowns. ?
And the WHO & CDC, who put this whole panic-demic in motion are now going with CYA by saying that lockdowns aren't the primary tool after seeing all the catastrophic damage caused by lockdowns. But the tyrannical, oppressive Democratics ain't listening!
Beware the 3rd wave of Covid-19 testing. These tests have major issues with false positives caused by high cycle thresholds which then have "downstream" impacts on all other CV19 data.Remember that when you see panicked stories about cases, outbreaks, and hospitalizations.

covid panics have become as regular & predictable as moon phases or cicadasas we're coming back into the "mistaking more testing for more cases" part of the cycle, let's see if we can get ahead of the fear here:the blue line is reported cases, green adjusts for more testing

It is really convenient that this stupid chart starts after the pandemic was essentially over after so many thousands were slaughtered in Blue states. This is the definition of misleading data/propaganda. Most of these cases are healthy people showing no symptoms but tested positive because these states were more responsible and implemented broader testing strategies which included the testing of more healthy people.
I know you spent a lot of time working out and typing that data....but you are not really saying that the states that didn't originally have high infections, due to climate/proximity/density/tourism etc .....and did nothing to control it in first wave, were more responsible?
