First post here so bear with me if I don't post some important information!
I'm trying to set a PR in the half marathon, which means beating a record I set for myself when I was 18 (I'm 37 now). Covid has really boosted my running output and I'm already in the best shape of my life, but I haven't run a half marathon in a long time and I'm curious as to how I should go about preparing myself to run at my goal pace for 13 miles. As for a time goal, I'm looking to break 1:25, and will probably run it Thanksgiving weekend, giving me around 6 weeks to finish preparing.
As of now, I've been running 50-55 miles/week since May, with long runs of 15 miles pretty much every week. Lately I've been doing one "tempo" run per week and one shorter speed workout, usually trying to go for KOM on a few Strava segments, treating it like kind of a race day.
My For my tempo runs, I've run up to 6 miles at my HM goal pace, and my plan has been to up that by a mile every other week or so until I get to a 10 mile run at my goal pace. This probably sounds insane, but I really don't know how else to ensure that I can run that pace for 13.1 miles, as it's such a big jump for me.
So my question is: Is there a better way to go about my tempo runs? I'm 100% confident that I can hit my goal time using the method above, but it seems kind of unorthodox and I'm wondering what other people have done.
Thanks for any help you can provide!
