Last night, as I was about to leave the office, I turned to John Kellogg to make sure he knew what time the race was today as he likes to go for his afternoon bike rides normally around 3 pm ET . I wanted to make sure he was watching the race as I knew instinctively 10,000 WR attempts don't come along very often.
Then it hit me. "Wait, is this the first time in my life I'll have ever seen a 10,000 WR attempt live? John have you ever seen a 10,000 meter world record?"
I was pretty sure the answer was no for me. As an American , I was pretty sure none of the 10,000 attempts of the 1990s were shown on tv here live. I wasn't at the Pre Classic when Bekele went for it in the 2000sn (but didn't get it and that race wasn't on tv).
John said that he thought I was correct. Now if you are over the age of 55, you may have witnessed a men's 10,000 WR live. John is like 61 and he remembers watching the 1972 Olympics when Lasse Viren fell down and set the 10,000 WR of 27:38.
So have you ever seen a 10,000 WR attempt?
