I am planning to enter a marathon in mid April, my first. It is apparently very flat, on a 5km or so loop with 18m elevation.
This would be my first marathon, and I'm trying to figure out what a reasonable goal would be. I recently ran a 10.8 km race with a big 80m hill near the beginning and two or three other non-trivial hills in 38:44, and according to Strava I ran 10km in 36:00 dead within that race. My guess is that this is equivalent at least to low 35:xx in a flat 10km, maybe sub 35. I also did a 9 x 1600m session with 400m jog rest recently where according to Strava I ran a half marathon in 1:26:30 within the session. The 1600m repeats were very comfortable, around 3:40 min/km at the beginning, down to a little slower than 3:30 min/km pace by the end. I have a few other sessions I could share, but don't really have other relevant races.
I have been running about 50km per week, sometimes less, plus 30km of brisk walking, though the running is good quality. In the summer I ran less (30 - 40km), but did quite a lot of cycling, maybe 150 - 180km of running plus cycling combined.
I have been training seriously for about a year, running regularly for a further year and a half.
My guess is that if I can up the mileage significantly, and train appropriately otherwise (quality long runs, threshold work, etc) then 2:45 or maybe even 2:40 might be possible. Is that realistic if I have a good day (I appreciate that the wheels might come off)?
Due to a change in job situation, I should be able to do two runs of about 10km every week day from the beginning of November onwards, so I should be able to hit at least 100 km / week from then, maybe 120 km / week or more.
