One of the best ever! I believe one season he had an ERA of 1.1. Just unbelievable.

-"The two most important things in life: good friends and a strong bullpen."
Great thread- Brock and Gibson in one month's time- that's rough for us Cardinal fans who grew up in the 60's, 70's.
Maybe it could be considered poetic. Both players were not only obviously great in the game but come crunch time their levels always went up.
13 shutouts in '68 and 1.12 ERA- these kind of stats will likely not be seen in MLB ever again.
After Gibson lost Game 7 of the '68 World Series against Mickey Lolich a gracious Gibson acknowledged, “I got beat because the other guy pitched a better game.”

I find the fact that he lost 9 games, given the 1.1 ERA, more insane than the ERA itself. 1968 was definitely the year of the pitcher; McLain also won 30 games that year.
'68 was indeed the year of the pitcher. It was the only year that a pitcher won the MVP award in both leagues. Carl Yastremski was the only player to hit .300 that year. Don Drysdale threw a record 58 and 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.
Amazing that Yaz was the only player in the the AL to hit .300 in 1968 (.301), and, in 1930, the average for the entire NL was .303!
Gale Sayers, now Bob Gibson. Heroes of my youth.
1.12 ERA and pitched 306 innings, Daaaaaam!
Bob Gibson was a bad man. Dusty Baker's rookie year with the Braves " Hank Aaron told me don't look at Bob Gibson , Don't talk to Bob Gibson , and if he hits you don't charge the mound He will kick your ass "
