A few thoughts:
-Races longer than 3k on the track will be dead before the 2028 Olympics, possibly as early as 2025.
-If distance races on the track die, will we get additional road races at the Summer Olympics?
-This festival seems like the kernel a good idea, but if it’s successful it would make sense for the IAAF to hold 4 “Distance Majors”—a 5k road race world championship, a 10k road race world championship, a half marathon Road race world championship, and one “off-distance” championship—throughout the year.
-Having a mass participation race alongside any single elite event makes sense, but having mass participation event alongside a multi-distance series of elite races in the same city on the same weekend seems like a cluster waiting to happen.
-I wonder if performance in IAAF Label road races will somehow be used to determine qualification for this championship race (or, as I would propose it, these championship races).
-I assume this will happen in March (alternating years with World XC, based on how the releases about this and the new World XC schedule were paired together)?
-If this is a success, it could happen every year. But it would be a shame to lose World XC, so perhaps it should happen in the fall?
-Keep the road mile out of this. It’s a fun exhibition event, but mile championships belong on the track.
