So earlier this week, World Athletics announced they'll be running a road 5k championships (and possibly a mile) at the same location as the World Half champs starting in 2023.
I don't like this idea.
Have we not learned anything from the debacle that was the short course xc champs? To me, having two world champs in the same weekend is unnecessary and only dilutes the talent/attention on the marquee race. If we had it this year, would Joshua Cheptegei run the 5k or the half? Or both?
Athletics doesn't need more events. It needs more compelling storylines which is what you get when the very best race each other.
1) It's hard to tell multiple stories at the same time. Like big kudos to London this weekend fro having no overlap between the men's and women's race. For once, we can focus on one race and then another.
2) Two watered down fields is way less interesting than 1 marquee field (although I guess that's not really true in the marathon - I like have 5-6 big races a year).
And are they really doing it in the 5k just to piss us off? So we are getting rid fo the 5k in the Diamond League to save 6 minutes of time but now adding in a road 5k champs?
And don't get me started on a mixed gender 4 x 2.5 xc race in the Olympics. God, why don't you add a 4 x 25 meter mixed gender relay for the sprints while you are at it?
I imagine the marketing people probably say it's easier to market some new " World Athletics Road Running Championships" to some potential sponsor, local town or tv entity but this seems to be not the way to go in my opinion.
What do you think? Disclaimer: It's kind of late, I'm a little short of sleep and have been drinking9only two weak beers) Am I right or off base here?
Yours in running,

PS. World Athletics employees, I imagine many of you are reading this. Instead of coming up with ways to dilute the world half fields, why don't you tweak the schedule and make it so we have the BEST OF THE BEST doubling in Tokyo 2021?
