It is a fair point. The shoes marathoners wore during the first half of the 20th century were basically just a leather dress shoe with a rubber sole. In the 60s and 70s, no one had a problem with the waffle design for shoe treads or the new light weight foam soles. The marathon WR dropped about 6 minutes when Nike, New Balance and Asics came on the scene in the 1960s. Better shoes certainly played a part in that. So, who says that shoe design has to be static based on what was available as of 1999? As long as the shoes meet the IAAF rules, we should be happy that runners are able to go faster with better shoes. Sports are more interesting if they can evolve. Do you want to go back to the days when golfers were all middle aged men with beer bellies using wooden drivers? I think it is exciting to see guys like Bryson smash the crap out of the ball on every hole using all sorts of new technology. We all know that there will be an implied asterisk on all the times marking before carbon plate shoes and after.
