His coach thinks he can run a 12:30 5k, what do you think he can run in the 3000 and 1500, my guesses are 3:32.1 and 7:19.7

Cheptegei sorry
I doub't he can break the 3000m record with the speed he got, i guess 7.23-25. 3.32 seems very resonable, and is very close to Bekele and Barega.
If what his coach says is true, then 7:18-7:20 off 5000m training alone.
Definitely sub 7:20 (if 12:30 in the 5000m). 3:30 in the 1500m if he prepares for it.
I'd bet low 7:20's, possibly right at the 7:20 world record. And under 3:30. If Jakob can run 3:28 I'd think Cheptegei could be right around there at 3:28/3:29 as well. Even Mo Farah ran a 3:27 or 3:28 in his track prime.
Lol. As you know already Farah never came close to 3:27. He barely went into the 3:28s.
Cheptegi is worth around 7:24 in the 3000 and that is where he is about equal to Jakob at this point. Jakob would likely run that this year in good conditions and with specific training.
Cheptegei is not even on the same planet as Jakob in the 1500. He may be close to McSweyn but I doubt it. Maybe a 3:31.

I'm a Jakob fan but I cannot understand people with these theoretical times. He literally just ran a 3000 in 7:27, so that is his time!!! Your PR is your PR, and this isn't an old outdated time, it just happened. Cheptegei is on a different level, simple fact. He just ran a 12:35 so stop with the he doesn't have the "speed". He might not have a blazing 400/800 in him, but why are people acting like a 60/400 is all he could possibly do?
Right now I'd say 7:20-21 on 3000m.
And 3:32 low on 1500m. Maybe 3:31 with good pacers. But I doubt he gets to 3:30 without any specific preparation.
Bekele ran 3:33 flat the year after he ran 12:37 & 26:17. He could never go under 7:25 in the 3000 and his 1500 best was a 3:32.35. Any reason we should see Cheptegei go much faster than this FFS?

With specific preparation I think he could get to 7:18-19 and 3:29 low.
Cheptegei got 7.33 in a hard 3000m at bislett last year. Ofc he is better now, but 14 seconds is alot. Bekele and Barega have 4 sec slower 1500m time than jakob, why should cheptegei be alot faster than them? Just because Farah was great at 1500m doesn't mean Joshua is the same
You're right. Your PR is your PR. So we already know Cheptegies PRs.
1500- 3:37.82
3000-7:33.26
So. Basically, Joe Klecker can leave him in the dust in the 1500.
In the 3000, he's a bit better than old brother Henrik.

Farah was great at the 1500 for a long distance guy but that's why he could never run a 12:35...
Komen's WR is overrated for sure. Check the iaaf tables if not using common sense. If you can run 12:30-12:33 you surely can run 7:18-7:20.. Be real
Farah was a Champion and one can never underestimate the heart of a Champion as the saying goes. He was likely much faster than his PRs but pursuit of Golds and competitive opportunities may have conflicted with his peaking. Great runner though.

In all fairness Jakobs PR is only a few weeks old. Cheptegie ran about the listed PR (or maybe a touch faster?) for the final 3k of his 5k WR all alone. I have a nearly impossible time seeing Jakob hanging with him in an evenly paced, fast 3000. In a battle between your standard top of the heap MD runner vs. a literally once in a multiple generation talent... I'll go with the multiple generational talent at a distance not wildly disimilar for the distance he set a decade+ old WR in over the last 6 weeks.

I like many of your posts but I can't go with you on this one. 7:20 and overrated can't be used in the same sentence. No way. That 7:20 is an incredible WR.

+1
the guy was too good at winning his races. He never a WR chaser, although his indoor two mile WR is something to consider! I know most people would say he wasn't good enough and that he only goes after the weak records...

Once somebody runs that 12:30 then we can resume the discussion around running 7:20.
