I am thinking of running an indoor 800m in roughly two months. I am in my mid 30s, took up running not so long ago (two and a half years ago, one year of serious training, but have been physically active all my life) and have never run an 800m race. All evidence suggests that I am an endurance/slow twitch type, e.g. my easy pace (heart rate 145 or so) is around 4:00 min/km or slightly quicker, I can easily do several days consecutive running of 12-15km or so at that pace for instance.
However, I also did 8 x 100m all in 15.xx recently with 80-90s 300m jog rest just as a pre-race sharpener, and it felt relaxed, which I would guess shows I have a little speed at least. I am more of a muscular build (in my legs) rather than very thin.
I feel that I lack anaerobic tolerance: I am not very good at tolerating too anaerobic situations, either in training or in races.
I feel that training for a couple of months for an 800m might give a nice stimulus to my training.
I would like to ask a few questions:
1) Is there some not too taxing session I can do now to see roughly what 800m shape I'm in? Not a 'predictor' workout, as these will be too anaerobic for me currently. But something not so taxing that could give some estimate? Maybe some session of short intervals?
2) How much is it likely I could improve with two months training focused on the 800m?
3) I would imagine it is speed endurance I should focus on for these two months? Do people agree?
