Registration usually opens around now. Not a thing on the baa webpage. Anybody heard anything? Virtual again next year?

Have some patience. Whether it happens (in April, September, or at all) depends on whether a vaccine has been deployed to a large amount of the population. They aren't going to know this for a long time yet so chill out and be patient.

Registration would have opened 10ish days ago meaning you would have been late to register anyway if you’re bringing this up now.

Why take the chance to have crazy hot weather in September? Why not postpone it in October?
My vote doesn't really matter but I would vote for elite only race and virtual for everyone else in April.
Then get back to it in 2022.
Predictions I am seeing say distribution for vaccine for masses will not be available until second 2nd quarter or 3rd quarter of 2021.
Ain’t gonna happen in April.
Boston is a weak suck city.

Yep -- this makes the most sense. You can't bring 30,000 people (traveling from all over the US & World) to a road race until this happens. April seems very, very unlikely which is why they delayed any form of registration. They also don't want to have to deal with a large scale cancellation again. I do, however, feel OP's frustration with the lack of racing opportunities. It doesn't feel right not having the Boston Marathon. The BAA could put out a press release saying they did not open registration, are monitoring the situation, and weighing their options. I think that communication could be helpful.
I hope they, at least, do an elite only race. Maybe they can do a 1,000 person race or something. Some race companies have been doing a decent enough job putting on events during these times with time trial starts and with good precautions in place.

Which is exactly what they've done:

They can limit it to only US runners for a year, start 1000-runner corrals every 5 minutes, etc. It's a marathon on the roads for God's sake, not a 1500 on the track. People spread out pretty fast. Lots of things can be done to make it happen as a full field race. Open the damn race and if someone is too afraid of Covid to run then he doesn't need to show up. Refund his money. Society should not be handcuffed because of a few fear mongers.

+1
I am thinking more like 50-70 max. Only the elites. Test them before the run. Have them do a loop course inside Boston if nothing else if all the cities don't want to close their streets..
Have a race to keep the tradition alive of racing on Patriots Day.
