Alright, so here's the deal... Growing up, I got into lifting weights with my old man when I was just 9 years old. I got a lot of muscle mass on early and my subsequent years of martial Arts, wrestling, and military service only helped me keep the bulk. Consequently, I've always really struggled with distance running. And, just to be transparent, "distance" for me is like... Well... More than a 400m sprint haha! In the Army, I regularly had to do a 2 mile run, and I was dead set on getting the max score at some point, which for my gender and age would have been a 13:00 2 mile run. I never quite got it, but came very close a few times.
Background out of the way. I'm 6 years out of the service and several times now I've gotten "back in shape". It used to be the case that I would just go out and run every other day for 2 weeks before a fitness test and I'd do well on it. Even after the service, 2-3 weeks of that regimen and I'd be seeing my mile pace drop to 7:30-8 over a 5k, under 7 for a single mile run. But I never had a strategy or specific routine... Just "go run, stupid!" Now, I'm 3 weeks into my latest get-back-in-shape session and things are so much harder. My first run I only made it 0.35 miles before I was gassed. My pride couldn't handle that, so I did some walk and run intervals until I hit 2 miles. I have just continued that over 3 weeks and I just hit a 4 mile run interval, so my mileage is steadily increasing with each workout. Thrilled about that. But my time.... I'm embarrassed to tell you guys, my BEST mile time was on that 4 mile run, at an average pace of 10:54. I just can't seem to get my legs moving. Anyone know what's wrong with my weak ass and how I can fix it? In the words of Ricky Bobby, "I wanna go fast!" But really, I'm not after a specific goal. I just want to get closer to that 7:30-8 minute per mile pace. I'm sure it will happen if I keep this up, but I'd love for it to happen before the 2024 election ?.
Be harsh. Be honest. I like that kinda thing. But please keep the shorthand and jargon to a minimum.... I just don't speak that language yet. I'm green! Thanks all!
