Xavier Carter and Bolt may have been able to do this. Maybe tyson gay also, he ran sub 45 training for the 100 and 200.
Also correct on both counts.

I also think that Grant Holloway would be able to do this if he weren't so focused on hurdling.

very clearly michael johnson had the ability to join it but chose not to
who else could have been there, and why do you think it took until 2016 to finally do it?
Grant MF Holloway. Tell me I’m wrong

Grant Holloway
100--11.24 (+1.6) when he was 15
200--20.66 ( -0.7) last year, so, what, @ age 21?
400-No real open 400 results, except a few indoor 50s/49s as a young teenager. No 400 hurdle result. A 37.7 300 hurdles and a 32.80 indoor 300 from when he was 19?
I guess everyone's going gaga over his 43.9 split anchor in a 4x4 a few years back? That's great and all....but that's a split. On an anchor. And he doesn't even do the 400 hurdles...so...I'm not seeing it with the info I see before me. Let alone the fact that he wouldn't alter his entire training plan and ethos simply to chase the 100/200/400 combo when he's busy working on his hurdles, where he has a legit chance of becoming the dominant force in the event for perhaps years to come.
So...Carson Bixs Ego: you're wrong.
Now, Bednarek has a legit shot at it. He's already got the 200, obviously, and he's flirting with the 100 a bit already. Considering that I see him more as a 2/4 guy, you'd have to think that with some work and focus he could really give the 400 a go, too. To me he's got the clearest shot of anyone other than Lyles.
Rai Benjamin?
I'd need to see him back up that 10.03 with another serious effort to convince me he really has that kind of pop in him, but if he WERE to prove that, then he'd inevitably have to have a really legit shot at it, as well.
But I'm dubious that he'd be able to back up that 10.03, frankly.
Ackbar: possibly but unlikely
Boling: not even close yet
Holloway: no.
X-man: quite possibly.
Gay: yes.
Bolt: yes.
Lemaitre: possibly but highly unlikely
ADG: possibly
Lewis: possibly.
Boldon: no.
Gatlin: possibly but highly unlikely.
Guliyev: no.
FloJo: yes.
Blake: no.
Greene: no.
Gardiner: possibly but highly unlikely
It’s very impressive. Gay at an early-season 44.89 is a serious candidate. Lemaitre with that huge stride, but almost always winded. Bolt easy, he JOGGED 9.87. Gardiner if he hit the weights and got lucky with wind. ADG an interesting prospect.
LaShawn Merritt
19.74 200m from 2016
10.56 100m from 2007
You’d think that if he banged out a few 100s in peak 2015/2016 when he ran his other PB’s, he might have managed a sub-10 also
Benjamin: no,
Merritt: no. Zero fluidity, square runner. Ok for maintaining 80-85% vmax, crap for absolute vmax
It would be like watching Rip Thompson running a 400m, just as pained. Yes I know RT went an honest 9.89, he had a stiff-legged reaching early accel that gained him a lot
So Dolt jogged 9.87 in London...anybody remember the fastest he ever jogged a 200? Or the fastest that Flake ever jogged a 200?
I seem to remember seeing someone jog the entire last 90m and finish in 20-flat...
If my memory isn’t defective, it’s sure a big what-if for a smoking 400
Bolt ran 43.6 leg in 4x400.
Gatlin ran 43.8 in 4x400 leg back in 2002 NCAAs
I feel like Bolt ran some 4x4 for Jamaica, anyone know splits?
(Ik its not the same but I could be a useful indicator
Two more possibilities are Asafa powell and Christopher taylor.
Asafa powell: Definitely a stretch with only a 45 high 400m, but he has run sub 10 and sub 20.He also ran a 31.6 300m in practice, pretty impressive considering he trains only for the 100m.
Cristopher taylor: A strong possibility with PRs of 10.11, 20.35 and 44.88 at 20 years old.
Bednarek will soon do this as well.
Norman is def the faster of the three over the first two. Can't take anything from Wade in the 400 tho
Boling will also be able to do this. I'd take him as the slowest of the four too.
Holloway could do this if he worked on it.
Can Warholm run sub ten? Doubtful.
Gardener maybe?
Forgot about lyles. I just don't see him ever trying but probably so. I thought of Benjamin as well.
Who is AG ?
ADG I mean. Who is that? My brain isn't working.
There's that one high schooler who's already fun in the 44s and mid 20's in the two. He was a senior this year. Justin Robinson maybe is his name?
The X man. Damn I was hyped about him. His career wasn't shiat by any means but just never seemed to reach his potential in my mind.
I'll tell ya someone who could of done all of this if he ever ran track and took it seriously instead of the NFL. That's Randy moss. He ran mid 20s in the 200 with zero training and lifting zero weights. He was the one athlete who could of been Bolt before Bolt. Plus if he took the same roids lol. I don't think there has ever been a better natural athlete.
I think he ran track as a soph in hs and won both sprint events but he also played baseball so it's not like he trained for it. Sadly he didn't run as a jr or sr.
Randy moss ran 21.95 in high school and,he probably did lift weights being a football player. He later ran 21.15 in college. He was very fast, but may be tyreek hill would be a better guy to break 10,20 and 44, he is the fastest non track guy in the nfl(meaning he never ran professionally like Hines or Hayes). He ran 10.1 and 20.1 at 18. Hill is the one of the few NFL player who might have had a successful track career.
Bolt ran 20.3 at 15, not taking track seriously, Randy moss is not comparable to bolt on the track
Thank you for the replies.
Yeah, I'm sure mj could do it if he wanted to. bolt? I only heard talk about long jump, but afaik he never jumped in his life. well except into bed with those scandinavian girls in london 2012.
You all mostly agree that the 400 is harmful to the 100. why? can they not pick and choose events season by season, if it is? would it permanently damage something? bolt and norman started in the 4 but became very fast nonetheless. I believe some commentators said it was even because of it, not in spite of. does anyone know about the physiology of it?
Good lord...this whole argument on Johnson just brings up the 1996/97 'Worlds Fastest Man' joke all over again.
For this group to be trying to determine if Johnson could run under 10s is ridiculous....he never did it. Not once! Never! Not in any 100m race, nor in any 200m split.
It would be the same as saying the Bailey could have beaten Johnson in the 200m in 1996. 'Well if he would have trained for it, and eaten his lentils, and had the proper jockstrap on....'
These men trained everyday for years. Part of Johnsons training obviously focused on starts and 100m running. What set him apart was his ability to hold his top speed, but certainly not his ability to get to it quickly.
Bailey destroyed Johnson on the start, and he was not a great starter himself.
So go ahead and make assumptions all you like...but Johnson is not part of the sub 10 club, never got close, not even a sniff....
And Bailey takes home all bragging rights!!
Ha! Still REALLY I to that 150 showdown, huh?
Sure pal. Hello straw, I'd like you to meet man.
You got it bud!!
Whatever it takes to watch some bragging goofball get his nuts handed to him....
Actually thats not fair, I never minded Johnson, seemed like a decent guy. But his hype team and the US Sports media were absolute idiots regarding the entire situation. Simply couldn't handle a non-american being the fastest. No question about Johnson being the best 200m/400m guy at the time. But the 'ow, my quad hurts..' was awesome.
Anyway, that was almost as much fun as watching you folks try to use some type of martian math 20 years later to prove that he could have gone sub 10....
