Very long story short. I'm a 42yo runner and just cashed in on my long time business for 800k (net of taxes etc.).
I've put the vast majority of this into investments along with some meagre savings I had to add to approx ~ 900k in investments and 100k for living and retraining expenses while I look for a new job.
My question is - what the hel! do I do now? I'm totally lost. I only know I want NOTHING to do with sales or cars (or really running a business for that matter. I'm super burnt out on that). A couple ideas I had:
- tech/dev. Seems fun and interesting and the local community college has a 2 year software dev program. I helped create the website for our car lot which was pretty interesting but didn't really code anything. Downside here is I'm old & not sure it would be much fun sitting in class with 20yo for the next 2 years. I was solid at math/stats through uni as well but may have lost my touch there.
-marketing. Kind of suits my skillset and digital marketing looks interesting. Only issue here is I would think lots of supply without a lot of demand in the job market. Also I'm an old 42 year old and not a fresh faced MBA so job prospects may be limited. I ran some Google Ads/SEO for 4 other "competitors" where I live and had good results for them but just never had time to become an expert.
- personal training. same issue as marketing with respects to job market but could use a bit of my business sense to set up a solo venture. Do training specific to runners/athletes? Another issue is I have real hip issues that prevent me from training too hard so that might be an issue in the long term. I probably have more accummulated knowledge of training than anything else in my life but just not credentialed. Also not sure if this is a good outlook to still be doing when I'm 58 etc.
- Other paths I've considered would be teaching (I think I would get bored and am a bit awkward around kids as don't have any of my own), GIS (again same issue as tech/dev but maybe skews a bit older?).
Would love to hear any experiences of those who have had a mid-life career change and how that turned out. Also any ideas would be appreciated. I have a little bit of money so I could retrain etc. but need to get on that ASAP as I'm now burning through $$.
