In fact, in every year since 1969, the United States Supreme Court has been controlled by a majority of Republican-appointed judges. There has not been a Democrat-appointed Chief Justice since 1953.
It goes in cycles. From 1932 - 1952, Democrats Roosevelt and Truman combined to nominate 14 Justices.
Since 1969, the White House has been controlled by a Republican President for 20 years and a Republican President for 32 years. It makes sense that more Republican-appointed Justices have been on the court since '69.
Nixon (R) - 6 years, 4 Justices
Ford (R) - 2 years, 1 Justice
Carter (D) - 4 years, 0 Justices
Reagan (R) - 8 years, 4 Justices
Bush (R) - 4 years, 2 Justices
Clinton (D) - 8 years, 2 Justices
Bush (R) - 8 years, 2 Justices
Obama (D) - 8 years, 2 Justices
Trump (R) - 4 years (pending election), 2 Justices (pending Barrett)
As for the Chief Justice, Warren retired during the Nixon Administration, giving Nixon the option to replace him. Burger retired during Reagan's term, and Rehnquist died during Bush's term. The timing of retirements and deaths are what controls who nominates the Chief Justice.
