I'd say Mottram's 8:03.5 two mile race is at right about on par with McSweyn's 7:28, although Mottram never recorded an official sub-7:30 race. I think peak Mottram (if he were dropped into today's race) would have been a little faster than McSweyn... but Stewy is definitely putting up some impressive performances!
And he defeated Tarike Bekele (7:29.1/12:53 the year before) convincingly in that race to win it outright. I'd say Mottram retains the most impressive race in this range ~ it also converts to 7:27.6. That being said, it's a great race here and so soon after an excellent 1500 as well.
This isn't a "surprising" time by Jakob, but it's an excellent one nonetheless. For people who were trying to single out the Monaco track or whatever for his 3:28, he's run 3:30 twice now elsewhere and 7:27 flat. Clearly he's backed up that performance. 12:51-55 5,000 if not faster is what's to be expected from him. Unfortunately for him, the 5-10,000 is incredibly stacked now, so that sort of time doesn't mean a whole lot. But he is the clear no. 2 at 1500!
