As the top returner, yeah he is a contender:) This will be an odd year without NXN to dilute the field, some states not having meets, and no spring track season to judge progress. For example those CT sophomores who both made the finals and then broke 9 indoors might have put up numbers suggesting they have closed the gap. Or pretty much any of the dozen or so other juniors who ran that race might have run like a 8:48 and stamped themselves as someone to watch. Instead they all look to be like 8:55-9:05 guys.
And how do you evaluate a sophmore who ran 4:02 late in the summer who has been doing distance forever. Might be inline for a huge breakthrough. Or maybe he would have better off doing more base training.
