Beaten badly by Girma & Copeland who both finished in almost identical time.
How overrated is Barega? Doesn't seem to have any speed.

The race was slow with a big negative split..
Barega can run 3:34 in my opinion, and he is not in his best shape. The guy has speed, but you can't compare it to 1500m specialists
He beat 1500m medalist and 1:43 runner Lewandowski. His speed is fine, he just isn't in top shape.
Also after checking, this is his second 1500 listed on IAAF and a over 1 second PB from 3:37.32 to 3:36.07
Why do you think Barega should be faster?
He is a typical long distance runner.
How fast do you think Jacob Kiplimo could run in the 1500m? Or Joshua Cheptegei?

Lew is far from his 2019 shape!

Well of course Barega can run faster as one can witness his ability to finish fast in a 5000m as evidence that he has the capacity to run 3:33 for sure. Even his 12:43 points to 3:33 ability at a minimum. That said, his 3:36 is a good sign that he is dipping his toes in the 1500m to improve overall.

Barega has not been close to his 2018: 12:43 again. So it is not right to base his 1500m potential on that outdated performance.

He had enough "speed" to win silver at the World Championships in the 5,000m beating Mo Ahmed and Jakob Ingrebridsten amongst others. He's a 5,000/10,000 runner. He finished 2nd in the Ethiopian Trials running 26:49 in a non time-trial type race for spots on the Ethiopian team (beating Kejelcha who was the silver medalist at Worlds). 5th in World Cross.
Nothing really overrated about the guy, he's not got the best finish, but it's plenty good and he's run some incredible times and backed it up.
Well of course Barega ran 12:49 this year so it is not like he has become a hobby jogger. As for Cheptegei I would guess on the day he ran 12:35 that he could have run 3:33 for sure, and Kiplimo probably 3:35 for sure.
Barega: 12:43 to 12:49 equals a loss in the 1500m on 1.5-2.0 seconds.
Cheptegei and Kiplimo: I would give them 3:32 and 3:34.
But regarding Kiplimo: We will get an indication when he is running 3000m in DL Rome.
All African bloggers/ commentators expect Jacob to smash Jakob.

Lol. So they're expecting Jacob to beat Jakob by 10+ seconds?? That would be "smashing" someone in a 3000.

His 12:43 surely points to minimum of 3:33?? Wow, you must really have confidence in this guy.
Bekele: 12:37 & 3:32.3 PBs, Geb: 12:39 & 3:33.78 PBs. Not sure how you arrive at the conclusion that he is surely 3:32 high?
I would guess 3:34 mid at best.

Galen ran 3:34.15 as a 12:58.9 runner who could not finish nearly as fast as Barega. Bekele and Geb did not run that many 1500m races and Geb did run 3:31 indoors.
Galen did not run enough time trial type DL races to achieve his full potential for his 5k pb. I think he ran only once in a loaded DL race. He was said to have 12:45 potential and I believe that. He moved on quickly to longer distances.
10 sec would be obliteration that's over 60m ahead
Id consider a 30m victory smashing, that puts the 2nd place finisher out of camera shot.

This is the argument offered by those who know little about the sport. Galen had numerous chances to run a fast 5000m. He ran 12:58.9. He did what he did.

This. He ran tons of fast paced 5Ks year after year on the circuit. That post couldn't be more opposite of the truth.
The great Mo Farah has really skewed what people think is possible for distance runners bumping down to the 1500. 3:37 is not Barega's potential, but you see guys typically running a few seconds slower than potential. This is a normal race for a high caliber distance guy.
Barega? More like Lewandowski goes home devastated. Dude was 3rd at worlds last summer in 3:31 and was outside of the top 3 in 3:36 in this race. Barega is fine, he has little experience running the 1500 and that's really not bad for a 5k/10k guy. I think he could run 3:35 or maybe 3:34 at best, but I don't really see any reason for him to run another 1500 for a while. Simply speed work for him.
