Apparently it was his first road race ever...incredible pace. Is this a future marathoner?

As a rule of thumb every "child running prodigy" at a distance over 10k will burnout or get injured.

This can't possibly be the actual World Record? There are plenty of kids that are very fast at that age. A solid achievement though, but I am surprised the WR is this slow.
In eighth grade, there are other males running roughly 5:30 mile for a half marathon? Don't think so.
That little kid post puberty may have a decent shot at being an elite javelin thrower. Half Marathon race at age 13 is way too soon. He should be learning how to sprint 200m & 400m at his age. The young lad should be chasing 25 & 55 200m & 400m at age 13.
Ever heard of Brad Hudson???

What does 5:30 pace for half marathon have to do with this? That would be 1:12.
It is a solid achievement. Though, the record is soft because few run that distance at that age.
There is not a good history of young teenagers running good times at half marathons and then running fast later.
About 1000 Africans right now could run faster at age 13. Betting Ping or Tuohy could have run this time if properly trained.
For starters the Garson kids ran faster. I personally ran a faster pace at 15 for a 25k, and at 14 l could do that. I continue to run and never stopped. I ran at the next level as well. I ran some good times and until now though my 1:16 or my 25k time was good but not close to World Record. Fact is most kids don't continue or never get much faster. It happens all the time. In fact with social media l looked some of the up and not only do they not run, but their fat now.
He will quit running by 16
Was this a circle route or out/back?

Yeah not looking to knock it but it's ~ 5:50 pace. 13 yo is freshman in HS right? You see some running sub-16 for XC at that age & some a bit better. Plenty have sub-1:16 half marathon potential and would get there with the right training. The problem is that this is a bit like the 1 hr run. Not too many 13 year olds are trying to turn their fast 5k time into a fast half marathon.
Hopefully this kid is training the way they want to (& is having fun) & have responsible parents/coaches that aren't putting pressure on them. You do see a ton of burnout with people knocking out the longer distances at this age. I mean, this kid could improve their 5k time with an easy long run of 13 miles max.
13 is 7th or 8th grade.
Broen Holman and Aiden Puffer could have crushed that time by several minutes at age 13 if they chose to race the distance.
I'm willing to bet that Dathan Ritz and Ryan Hall could have run sub 1:10 when they were 13-14 years old, they just suck with shorter distances.

So could "possibly" many ex or current world class male runners, but....they didn't.
You do it or you don't---if you don't, well...you didn't do it;)
