If you haven’t read this article it’s a must read. The amount of misinformation, uncorroborated accusations, a general lack concrete solutions to create change make Andrew Cooper seem less like a voice for the voiceless and more like a privileged white runner trying to parley the BLM movement for personal gain.
He quit via social media screenshot and then is annoyed that his coach doesn’t respond. What did he expect, he didn’t have the decency to have a conversation with his coach, was he hoping Bobby would respond via a retweet?
Andrew calls CAL (perhaps the most progressive institution in the world) “disgustingly racist” and yet gives no context or reasoning for such an assertion. Perhaps instead of quitting the team via social media it may have been prudent and perhaps more meaningful to enlist the support of your team and coaches. Robyne is one of very few black director/head coaches in the country, perhaps she would have been interested in supporting his crusade to fix the NCAA... alas we will never know because he quit on social media and texted a screenshot to his coach.
He also states the the NCAA “spits- we’re compensating you with an education, and that’s priceless” first off that is not what the NCAA says and they don’t pay for anyone’s education, the instruction does. He states that you don’t receive “like, a real education” he believes this because apparently his school didn’t let him join a club (not an NCAA rule). Did he forget he got to be on a team, much better than a club. He complains being on a team students don’t know how to uses “skills, their work ethic” in real life. He must have missed the part where division 1 athletes are regularly hired at a higher rate that their non athlete regular people counterparts who we part of some random campus club.
The inconsistencies and flat out falsehoods go on for far too long. I encourage you all to read the article share your thoughts and please provide solutions to the problems Andrew has pointed out. From what I gather he would be happy if college sports didn’t exist due to the fact that it exploits people of color by creating a pathway to college they may not otherwise have... but wait Andrew tweeted his disapproval of Minnesota cutting their track team? What is the solution, do we like sports or not, I’m confused?
LRC Note. We added to the title to make it more descriptive. It was initially entitled. "Athlete quits via screenshot; surprised coach doesn’t respond. "
