Before I say anything about my horrible day, I want to say THANK YOU to everyone for the kind words and encouragement. You guys and gals are great.
So...yeah it was hilly, especially in the second mile, yeah the grass was wet, and yeah there were plenty of turns, but I ran like garbage. Very surprised, after pouncing on that run earlier in the week, finishing 5:42, and then 5:36 for the final .25 with NO problem.
To be honest, I figured sub-18 today—easily—no matter the surface...and maybe even get close to a PR. Yes, get close to a PR. What a rude awakening I had. Did not even win the master’s. Was fifth overall, and a 48-year-old took the master’s. I ran 18:33 for fifth and he ran 18:16 and cleaned my clock for fourth place.
So, after a paved start, we hit the grass at about the .75 mark. Then about 1.5 or so on the grass and in the woods and then about .75 or so to finish back on the pavement. Ran my weirdest splits ever...5:36, 6:28, 5:48. That 5:36 first mile actually felt fine. Had NO idea whatsoever that I had slowed to 6:28 back on the trails in the second mile. Was shocked to see that split come up. Thought my watch was busted.
I work to hard and to have this type of crummy performance is very disappointing. Makes me wonder if it is all worth it. Cannot fathom how I ran 18:06 in 98% humidity about a month ago and then come nowhere near cracking 18 today in 47 degrees. Puzzling. Aggravating. Sorry for the rant, but races like today’s make me not want to race anymore.
Thanks for listening, my friends.
