The insane premise of this report is that black athletes do not benefit from these athletic scholarships (last I checked, the vast majority of scholarships on the men's side went to football and basketball, which are overwhelmingly black athletes). There are tons of black athletes on scholarship in non-revenue sports. Why do they publish drivel like this during a year where the revenue sports aren't even really competing and thus not generating revenue for their respective programs? The handful of athletic programs in this country that actually turn a profit are quite rare, and none of them are turning a profit this year. It's not like they just pulled the scholarships from all the athletes because of COVID. Without these athletic scholarships [black athletes (particularly black male athletes) participate in D1 and D2 sports at a rate roughly double their percentage of the population] a lot of these individuals would not get the benefit of a college education (which is a huge asset long term in terms of lifetime earnings).
What they should do is eliminate athletic scholarships all together. These college teams don't generate revenue because people are tuning in to see individual players, they generate revenue because people are tuning in to watch their school's team play. People would still tune in and watch if all of the pro caliber athletes decided to forgo collegiate athletics and enter a minor league. I've watched plenty of college sports games and even some minor league baseball games with my kids without knowing the name of a single player on the field. When it comes to college sports, the name on the front is far more relevant than the name on the back.
