I'll second this. I'm no 800m runner (I've got no top end speed), but pretty much everyone slows down in the 800m. It's a matter of slowing down the least (in a race). Almost no one speeds up unless the first lap was ridiculously tactical/slow.
I'm running a real race tomorrow! "Road" 5k (really on a gravel trail) in Denver!
Sorry to hear about Mrs. Stone's marathon. That is some BS.
Nice! That’s low enough altitude it should give you a reasonable read on things. Can’t wait for results.
Super Seppo! Best of success to you.
Will send some good vibes out to you and our time trailers. After a solid LR yesterday, I came back and hit it out of the park this morning...in the rain and in the hills...11.5 at 6:43 overall...full progression...7:38, 7:19, 6:57, 6:50, 6:49, 6:47, 6:42, 6:35, 6:29, 6:17, 5:58, 2:58...in complete control.
On a massive high. Can feel it throughout my body.
Go get it, boys and girls!
Run was 11.5 at 6:43 overall...
Hey OR,
How old were you when you first went sub-3? Just curious...
Coach - Good question. Ran 2:52 at rIchmond 2017, and so I would have been 48, just shy of 49...early Jan. b’day.
Forgot to tell the BEST part of this morning’s story...As I am coming up the backside of the last significant hill on the way home, a little more than 1.5 to the finish, I see a blue-gray minivan go by and the driver yells out, “Go G***!” I smiled inwardly, and then a moment later, an old Beastie Boys song began to crank in my head—I hear, “Kick it!” as I crest the hill, and then it was a smooth “boom“ until the end, with the guitar solo playing over a few times about midway to the end, and then “You gotta fight!” repeating to the end. It was the old OR flyer scenario in spades, mental music and all...
Next 800 M TT I may do the opposite and go out faster than I planned. Planned 68. May go out in 66 and see what happens.
Yeah. That seems to be the consensus on the 800...go out fast and then try to hang on. Your 2:21 is not all that bad for a first stab at it.
Any NP update from today?
Also excited to hear how Lanc did today.
And a very belated congrats to the JB crew! I still remember meeting your beautiful family in Houston 2019. Hope everyone is doing well.
I know the results from Strava but won’t blow up their spots.
Hey Allen..Just got home and settling in...what’s on the menu?
Hey, OR, I just pulled in the driveway after a brutal day on the job. Up and down a ladder for 10 hours. Good workout for my knees. Ha! Very thirsty now. There's a few local craft brews in the fridge. Might go for them all!
Congrats on this morning's flyer. Man, I long for that feeling again.
I ran the half mile a couple times in high school. We we told to go out hard, float the third 220y, than sprint with all you've got left. My PR was set years later, after college. A buddy and I stopped at his old high school track near Albany, NY, and raced an 800. I ran off his shoulder for a lap, pretty easy, then blew by him, hammering the second 400. Finished with a 2:10.2 by my watch.
I used to work with a gal who was the Wisconsin State Champion at 880. She ran 2:05, back in probably 1974? Dang! She introduced me to my lovely bride, btw.
I'm still doing 3 runs a week. 16 miles total. Progression runs, and I'm still seeing improvement, both average times, and closing miles. hooray!
Have a great Sunday and coming week.
Happy running.
Hey OR, are you planning any special prep for your upcoming 5K? When is your marathon? Wine or beer tonight? I stopped after one beer, switched to sparkling water. Old age, I guess.
I mentioned my friend the former Wisconsin State High School Champion. Coincidentally, she posted on Facebook tonight -- still going strong in her mid-60s:
"120 consecutive days. 672.1 miles.
12.3 lbs. and 3 toenails lost.
I'm going to take a couple days off, then start on the 7 Continents virtual run, with some biking and strength work tossed in."
Wow! In her 40s she was doing full Ironman-length triathlons. I can't imagine that!

I DNFd today.
Wasnt feeling great all week. Flat and heavy legs, hoping they would make a turn by today but never did. Went out what I thought was a fair pace but it felt like I was running in boots. Ill post more tomorrow.
Sorry to hear. You are definitely fit. You have made a ton of progress since you started posting again. Here’s to recovering, feeling better, and slaying your 50k in a few weeks.
By chance , did you run the Fair on the Square? Mrs. Stone knows the guy who took second place today and I heard there was a mishap where the lead bike took a few runners off course.

Thanks stone! One correction, its a 50 mile! haha
That is the race I ran. Didnt hear about that incident. I ran the half and could see the lead bike through mile 10 and they were on course. Cant comment on the marathon. Was a pretty simple course with arrows painted on the road, arrow signs at turns, and volunteers/police at intersections. Seems hard to go off course.
My bad, 50 miler. Bit of a difference, haha.
Yeah, her friend ran the marathon. Apparently the lead bike took the top couple runners a bit off course and they had to double back. As if 26.21875 miles isn’t enough, lol.
