I just ran 2:21.5. BLEH. Was so paranoid to get out to fast I got out to slow. Like 71+. Never hurt like it was supposed to. But my first 800 ever. May redo it next week.
Afterwards did 4x200 and then 3x1/2 CV on road on way home. So def didn’t go into the well. Live and learn.
Good luck boys. RRR is going away for the weekends to a wedding so will have some kobeers for y’all
I ran the 800 in high school and for better or worse, our coach stressed the importance of going out fast. He had us running pretty damn close to an all out 400 effort (minus the sprint) in the first quarter. Maybe he had no idea what he was doing but I do recall him giving us an experiment in a controlled time trial to prove his point. If I recall, at the time I was racing the 800 somewhere around 60+70, so around 2:10. My 400 time was typically around 56. In the controlled time trial, I had to run the first 400 in no faster than 70, then "race" the last lap. If I recall, I ended up splitting something like 71-71. I guess the moral of the story he was trying to impress was that there is no saving energy in that event.
Now, one might look at my splits and controlled time trial and conclude that my aerobic fitness component to the race sucked. At the time, we did not run a lot of miles. I wish I could go back in time and run more miles in high school and also study up more on proper 800 training and race execution.
