The chances are very low. The US needs their shite produced in China. Americans are addicted to cheap crap.
......or one could say the top 1% like their labor cheap and their profit margins massive.
Domestic Violence and Civil War from within either from Far Right or Far Left seems to be a bigger threat.
No chance of premeditated nuclear war. I was way more scared of dying during the Cuban missile crisis.
But you're talking about "the defender of freedom and civilization" here! Especially the freedom not to wear masks. If anybody gets nuked they must have deserved it. Just like all those black "criminals" the police keep shooting.

**the FBI wants to know your location**
The only country that has used nuclear weapons against another is the USA. It would be more likely the USA fires on another country fire, especially with the petulant child of president
The United States has the most advanced missile defense systems in the world
If it was just a rogue missile it's probably like a 95% chance we could intercept it and destroy it without any damage
If it was an all-out attack then it really depends on what country and what kind of stockpile they have
But outside of a rogue Nation like North Korea is really little chance of an all-out attack and that's why we're doing everything to limit North Korea from getting a substantial stockpile
Anyway I just wanted to mention that no one's here really seems to understand the missile defense system which is actually multiple systems
Also I really don't think China would ever do anything like that as they're pretty successful and fairly stable the real threat is an unstable country like North Korea or terrorists getting a dirty bomb.
Ah... but hypersonic missiles are a new ball game that are nearly impossible to defend against. And while yes China is developing them, so is Russia, who care far less about retaliation. Putin is devious.
And our defenses are far from impregnable regardless. Currently there are two levels of defense, Midcourse and Terminal.
Midcourse - Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicles launched from Fort Greeley Alaska and Vandenburg AFB California, these intercept missiles in middle phase of flight. Not tremendously successful in tests, often require multiple launches.
Terminal - the THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, is the las course of action for intercepting ballistic missiles. These have been deployed to frontline situations (think S Korea) but also implemented in Hawaii and Alaska.
Also helping with ballistic defense duties is the Aegis Sea Based Defense, missiles mounted to US Navy ships (mostly stationed in the Pacific) that aid with Midcourse interceptions. They are aided by powerful X Band radars that are floating or stationed in friendly East Asian nations. Finally we have Patriot anti ballistic missiles, which are again Terminal defense and not that effective.
The major issue is that a hypersonic glide vehicle of the MIRV type (multiple independent reentry vehicle, meaning one missile can break apart and have many independently targetable nuclear warheads) can boost up and skip over the atmosphere at dummy dummy fast speeds. Therefore, look for more space based countermeasures like Satellite Killers to pop up. Hey, wasn’t the Space Force just created? Anyway...
There's also an early detection and early stage missile defense system
But regardless there's little chance that a Russia or China would launch a nuclear attack at the US
Because they are not sociopaths and they are not completely devoid of reality
Ultimately launching nuclear weapons would come back to severely hurt the country that did whether it was from a direct retaliation or just the nuclearfallout and the devastation it did to the Earth
There's nothing to be gained by creating vast stretches of nuclear radiated Earth
Also it would make every other country turn against that country and would make them the scapegoat for all other countries
Even Iran is much to stable to launch a nuclear attack unprovoked at another country
The only real worried as I said was North Korea because they are basically a dictatorship where one person could go crazy and do such a thing. At least they have some relations with China which is thought to be stabilizing and they have shown that they want to try to join the global community
This got me thinking of WW2. The Axis powers were trying to harvest nuclear weapons in Norway but there bases were damaged in 1943. If they had managed to harvest the power I wonder what they would have done to the Allies. Same if the Germans managed to stop the Russians advancing from 1943-45, would the USA have eventually nuked central Europe? If the war lasted another year or 2 then there would probably be a nuclear war and the world would have a lot of fallout in many places

Trump has brainwashed you O.P. You never would have stated China losing trade wars unless for your love of Trump. China, Trump and trade war is phony. China & Japan do U.S. a favor by buying a significant amount of U.S. T-Bills, U.S. T-Notes & U.S. T-Bonds. China is focusing on making money. U.S. would have to do something really foolish for China to launch a first strike. Even if China launched a 1st strike, it would only be tactical nukes. China would not start an all-out nuclear war.

WAY lower than the chances that such a preemptive strike would come from the US. China's current leaders are at least sane. They may not be nice people but they are sane. The same cannot be said for the current POTUS.
Imagine if he loses in November. Talk about "got nothing to lose anymore!"

0.000001% - only because of some mentally ill person that just wants to click a button
if it did happen both country mainlands would be destroyed but there would still be some usa territories, and probably alaska. and a few chinese missiles might be downed by anti missile missiles. all american military troops in foreign countries might unite and head back to alaska or one of the territories and form a new country or they will dissolve their group into other countries with the tech they had going there
Unfortunately the US is one of the only if not the only country where one person, the president, has sole discretion of when and if to use the nuclear weapons
North Korea is probably the other one but of course we don't know for certain how their government works
As to the original post China is much less likely to use nuclear weapons as they would need majority approval from a council of trusted officials
Yeah basically just wanted to say how absurd the original post was because of any country China is one of the least likely because of the way their government is structured and because of how successful their economy has been
Hopefully the US will change its laws as I think there is some legislation in progress to amend the first strike ability of the president
