If Hall takes it seriously and goes all out we could see a lot of devastation, and a huge course record.
I think we all agree we'll see a lot of devastation if he goes all out, just not of his opponents.
+1
Looks like he didn't go all out so does Banana Bread go home devastated?

Does this mean ultra-runners are better than we thought?

At least a little bit. But nobody will admit that.
That whole idea that some 2:05 Marathon dude will come and shred all the ultra records are made up by people who have never done a ultramarathon, like Banana Bread.
I'm the ultimate Walmsley fan boy, but Ryan is a gun and well done to him for finishing today. Ultras are hard, but it's nothing on the time, effort, talent and dedication it takes to run 2.04. Ryan deserves a lot of credit for his career, what he's done since and having a go at an ultra.

Only he’s not a 2:05 dude, he WAS a 2:05 dude a long time ago.
IDK what the elevation gains are in this race, but every extra lb in the mountains sucks. Finishing was just a matter of not getting injured, and that’s all he was aiming for.
This was an everyman result—which is fitting, as that is what he currently is. I do randonnée over in europe, and can say that there is a HUGE gulf between the guys at the very top, and the great bulk of average guys, among which now sits Hall.
This is no news. Some average everyman finishes at the back of his first ultra. No sh!t.

Why so slow? Was he walking the entire time? YIKES
Always interesting to hear the perspective of a no talent guy who's never done anything. An "average everyman", if you will.
So this guy is a Stanford grad and apparently doesn't know the difference between "your" and "you're"?

And particularly relevant to this recreation by Hall—a no-ultra-talent guy who has never done anything in the ultra.
"This is no news"
And yet here you are, repeatedly commenting on it

Perhaps you missed the part where the race started at 8,842', climbed up to Star Pass at 12,349', and included 9,061' of ascent overall (due to many ups/downs) in 43.5 miles. So Ryan averaged 17:39/mile, while the winner averaged 9:44. In mph, which is generally a better gauge in the mountains, he was a shade under 3.5mph while the winner was a shade over 6mph. Last year this same winner averaged roughly 7mph, so this year's altered course (Covid) was obviously more difficult.
No doubt he walked many and/or most of the climbs, especially the steeper and/or higher elevation ones. For example, I would guess nobody outside perhaps the top 2-3 actually ran the final mile up to Star Pass. I've run the race 4 times and tried to run that final mile to the pass but never quite could, perhaps 50%ish, but at a certain point discretion is the better part of valor. And I live in CO and train at 12k+++ quite regularly in order to prepare for these kinds of races.
Overall he finished about where I thought he would - near the back of the field. But he finished and had fun! His post-race interview was great - all smiles, all positive vibes. It's the sad people who were hoping for an epic fail (DNF) who are going home devastated, not Ryan.
I’m happy he had a nice hike
That's a long way of saying, "it was still very slow".
So basically its harder to lose to him than beat him.

lol. YIKES is he slowwww
122/145 Finally an ex-pro who takes hobbyjogging seriously.
Ultras are a great way to hide how slow and out of shape you are. You can tell people you "ran" 43 miles and their minds will be blown. Sounds better than doing an all day hike and shuffle jog. Hall wouldn't embarrass himself by doing a real road race and revealing that he can't even crack 3:00 hours now. Since no one cares about or respects ultras this was a fun attention sealing thing to do for fun.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
