So you guys posted JC's 5k World Record upload on Strava. I am sure you noticed that the recorded distance is 5.02k. That is a remarkable GPS accuracy when it is widely known that running with a GPS on track is fairly inaccurate. In particular, the great majority of cases it tends to overstate distance by "a bit". What is "a bit"? Normally can be as bad as 3-4%. In this case is 0.4%, which includes those extra meters after he crossed he line before he stopped his watch. On average it is around 2%. And why? It in the way GPS' triangulation works (or to be more precise it's called "trilateration").
Now before you rush to the keyboard and grab your pitchforks few things:
1) I have been GPS tracking a lot of people for research for quite a while. This level of accuracy is very unusual;
2) The number of cases where the distance is underestimated "or about right" (like in this case) I can count them on my hand.
3) Some GPS watches tend to be more accurate than others, but is not clear cut. The same model on the same track can result in significantly different measurements.
So here's an inconvenient thought. There have been few whispers over the years that MONACO's TRACK IS SHORT (those who have been around might also remember that Rieti, where DK set the current 3000m record, is another track that has been rumored to be short over the years). I am sure there are others out there.
So Brojos... for starters it would be interesting to find out what model he was wearing, but here's also an idea for you. Catch a plane, book a room in that fancy hotel that sits below the track and sneak in with a wheel so we can put this to bed, once and for all.... not kidding. Plus you might enjoy good weather and mix up with the jet-set and have a little thrill in the local Casino.
Have at the poster if you wish (who's not commenting any further on this) but where there's smoke....
