Where’s Alaphine? Complains she gets no respect but when there is one race to compete against the best in 2020 she’s a no show.
She won the Olympic Marathon Trials, and she is correct- blatant racism was on full display with the focus on 2nd. How about you have some respect?
She was predicted to do well in the Trials, not a shocker. She had already ran 2:26:50 a year earlier.
Molly was not predicted to be in the top 3 and it was more of a shocker that she was right behind her at the finish than Alaphine winning.
Had this race happened in 2012 and Goucher was 2nd and Molly first, more of the media attention would have been on Goucher (even without her chasing the camera for publicity) versus Molly.
There's a lot of ways to look at it. Also, she was not known by the average runner the way a Goucher or Flanagan is.
Look at Bernard Lagat for instance, if he had taken 2nd he would have gotten a lot of attention. Molly was simply a good story because it was her first marathon and she was right behind first place.
Or, you can simply use the race card as a blanket statement to make yourself feel better.
