He didn't all of a sudden change and start doing bad things. He changed AFTER he did bad things as he was desperately trying to cover his tracks and protect himself.
That's exactly how it goes when people like that are on the verge of getting caught. Starting off as everyone's best friend, taking advantage of it, and becoming a nightmare trying to save himself from imminent trouble once people become aware of his disgusting acts.
