It seemed his goal the last few years was to hold all the distance records simultaneously which obviously isn't going to happen anymore.
Does this motivate him still to be fast in the marathon? or is this the end?

No...in fact it removes motivation because he can't have the big 3 distance WR at same time. It doesn't matter, he is a DNF at London anyway.

Yeah, unfortunately I think this it it for him. Twice he’s been within seconds of getting the marathon world record and now obviously can never hold all 3 again. He stated that was the goal so it must be deflating

I'll help you out. There will not be a London marathon.
May it’s the reverse.
Takes the pressure off so now he just goes in with feelgood vibes and pops a 1:59
With the drugs they're letting everyone use this year, I have no doubt Bekele could run a 12:32 and snatch the record back, without interrupting his training for London.
I think people here overestimate motivation in this sense - these guys aren't high schoolers vying for their school record. Bekele is probably motivated largely by money, and it's worth questioning his mental focus this late in his career (especially with COVID).
I've been wrong before about him, but I foresee a poor performance.
I know Bekele is great at the shorter distances in his previous life. But marathon has never been his cup of tea. One great race usually follow by a bunch of DNF.
You know, he's no spring chicken. You guys talk like you expect him to go on forever.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
