so his previous track best was 22 seconds slower, thus the new nike VF track spike gives you 22s

I look forward to the drug test results. It is amazing what a lockdown, pharmacy, clown shoes, laser lights and the bounciest track in the world will do. This doesn't count as a WR even if he was clean. If you gave Bekele all them advantages he would literally run 12:25. This is just like the Nike sub 2 or Ineos experiment. It is a staged event where Joshua is given all the technology possible to his advantage. Bekele had to do all the work himself on a harder track. We all know that anyone who runs in Monaco isn't capable of running as fast on any other track in the world
Either sport evolves or it dies..........we arent going back to Cinder tracks and hand times so get over it.
Just an amazing run by Cheptegai.
He said he wanted to go for the WR, went for it, and succeeded. Credit to him for stating his intentions humbly in advance. This added interest to the sport, this event and him.
The weather was too warm to be ideal , but he did it anyway. We knew he could run ok in heat from World XC in 2017 in Uganda. After breaking away from everyone else, he died over the longer distance there (finished 30th) but perhaps he has learned from that.
Incredibly consistent pacing in this run. Even more remarkable considering he did not do that much specific track work before this (apparently most of his track training is on an uneven dirt track).
Has anyone asked him if he paid any attention at all to the pacing lights? Did he even know they were there? Did he care?
What will this run do to the demoted status of 5k in Diamond League meets? Certainly this 5k was the highlight of this meet. In the future, will it require legitimate WR attempts to see 5ks added to a regular Diamond League program?
What like Asbel Kiprop? Kipsang? How many others running around the hills chewing ugali and running records.
Look up most corrupt countries in the world Uganda is well up there.
Do you think ignoring doping is morally the correct thing to do? Why should we leave the sport. It is the dopers and facilitators like you who should go.
I don't know if there will be any more meets, but I would love to see Cheptegei take a shot at the 10,000 record before the season ends. He's in such good form.

Would be interesting to see him up against Rhonex.

If I could go back in time I could single handily literally destroy the Roman Empire and Julius Caesar. I could fly a plane or helicopter and carry a few guns. Does that make me more powerful than an Empire?

Nobody knows this.
And almost certainly it is wrong.

Yes

I think he could have EASILY ran sub 12:30min, but it was more prudent to reach a new WR, than trying to reach too high and then burn out, and not even get the WR.
I think he can take any WRs from 3K-HM (excluding steeperchase obviously) easily. Not sure about the marathon, as it's a different beast.
My advice is to never ever ever use the words “easy” or “easily” with world records. Or any other records for that matter. You diminish the incredible preparation work that goes into being ready, the mental focus needed during the event, and the intense physical discomfort endured.
It would be good for the sport that the 5,000m is now again being seriously challenge in a pace- rather than race tactic- manner.
The Mo Farah era saw better runners being out psyched time and time again, not running their own race and getting out-kicked time and time again. When medals are on the line these guys take the path of least resistance, despite the fact that every previous time the outcome has been the same.
In fact it was boring.
The sub 12:30 5,000m and sub 26 10,000m should now be the new sub 4 chases to bring track back into mainstream popularity. Everyone knows about Bannister and the sub 4 mile, everybody can 'relate to' how great that was.
Lets do it again.
Sub 12:30, sub 26, sub 2hr...whether it is specifically set up or not (wasn't Bannister's?), lets them go for it, and as T&F fans, let's support rather than knock them.
Cheptegei did all his track workouts on a grass track at 8,200 feet altitude. Take a supremely gifted athlete for running and do all all the hardest work at that altitude on grass, the track at Monaco must feel like floating on air. Cheptegei will proceed to take the 10k WR, and slowly work his way up.
I think his speed is underestimated. I’ll bet he can run sub 4 reps at sea level. If he can average 4:03 for 3.1 miles, sub 4 is his training interval pace.
Cheptegei has one of the smoothest running forms I've ever seen. Great time. Looked like he could go faster.
You are right about the temperature. He ran 12:35 in 79 degree weather. That's incredible. Never thought that WR would be beaten by a runner with a PB 20 seconds slower even though he had many performances that indicated he was much faster than his PB. Still to beat Bekele's WR was an amazing run.
I never thought the 5K WR would be beat this season.
Now I am hoping the 10K record can be beat by him.

Change the name and the description to "cyclist" and you could have been describing the attributes of Lance Armstrong, because that's what we used to hear about him, too. They are always so "supremely gifted".

How would you even know this? Stating your opinion as fact does not make it so. If woody kincaid can run 12:58, why can’t a guy that has lived at altitude on organic foods his entire life not run 20 seconds faster?
Do yourself a favor, and pick something else to watch. At the minimum, don’t come here and spout your unfounded negativity.

“Ignoring doping”? Wtf are you on about? Show us something that indicates Cheptegei is doping (excepting unfounded opinions stated as fact).
And why would you associate corruption in a country’s government and transpose that onto an athlete? Are you a murderer? You know, Jack The Ripper was from the UK. Is that how this works?
I remember when breaking a blue riband track wr - especially one that was years old - was a big deal. This record has passed us by as a mere footnote to the daily news. That says something about how track is regarded today - and the degree of public cynicism about records now.
Farah and Bolt are gone. No one cares about running anymore. Sad but true.

And 75% humidity. Cheptegei must be on so much EPO that his sweat must contain 50% of it.
This run is certainly a far bigger farce than Bekele's 12:37.
