The above poster is absolutely right. No one talks about it but there are huge levels of affirmative action for “development” cases, aka children of prospective or past donors. This is equal to paying to get in. Often the minimum to be in this exclusive group is often 50k and above, or even 6 figures at some higher institutions. If you’re legacy, then it’s essentially 100% guarantee that you’ll get in. Many of the Fortune 500 CEOs on Harvard’s fundraising board get a free pass for their children. Guess what the majority of these kids look like? WHITE.
Poor whites and asians ?
Not illegal. They are basing acceptance on money, not skin color. They would be even happier if a bunch of black NBA players paid a bunch of money to get their kids admitted. The legacy kids are doing it in spite of being being white which actually makes it harder to be admitted.

Except there are not a bunch of NBA players paying a bunch of money. There are a bunch of rich white and Asian people paying money and leveraging their influence to get their kids admitted. In spite of being white...lol. Keep on telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.
https://slate.com/business/2019/09/harvard-admissions-affirmative-action-white-students-legacy-athletes-donors.htmlTelling what? Nobody is denying that white people richer and more generous.. It is not illegal to make large donations. It is a great thing because it allows poor kids to go for free. What a great system. It is immoral and illegal to discriminate based on race. It is insulting by you to say that blacks are dumber and need an admissions boost.

Who said blacks are dumber? Lol. Are you a gymnast or a magician? That was an amazing contortion or obfuscation of what I wrote. I'm just going to stop because you've actually earned my admiration. You could help train the next few press secretaries for Trump!
It will be awesome when the quota system is removed and Yale goes from 46% white to 30%. The marginal white students all think they will replace a black/hispanic kid. But that isn't what is going to happen. Those black, hispanic, and marginal white kids will all get replaced with some asian kid who is vastly more qualified.
Legacy alone won’t do much even at a good state school. $50K is barely tuition at an Ivy League school. You have to donate 7 figures to persuade admissions.
Most white kids are legacy because their parents went to an Ivy League school and had the foresight to put them through the best prep schools to prepare and have the qualifications for Ivy League.
And this is barely breaking news. Affirmative action has been around for decades.
The US Supreme Court upheld diversity as a factor in admissions in the Fisher decision in 2016. This is just a naked attempt to overturn Fisher by using the Justice Department to harass schools that are following the law. And it is part of a clear pattern by the Trump administration to throw everything but the kitchen sink at diverting attention from the complete failure to address the pandemic. This has even included rescinding rules on shower head flow rates.
The sad thing is that affirmative action at the Ivies really only replaces rich white kids with rich minority students. The percentage of minority admissions to Ivies who are also low SES has dropped significantly since affirmative action programs began in the 1960s.
I get the frustration over admissions. My sister went to a snooty private school for high school. She would study for hours every night and ended up the salutatorian for her class. She had near perfect SATs and took tons of AP classes at a school where AP was 10x harder than public school AP. She applied to Yale and got an interview. She got rejected but three other kids at her school who were lower ranked got in because they were legacies.
But the fact of the matter is that the idea that there is some purely merit based system to determine who gets to go to elite universities is just a farce. Most kids who are on the Ivy level got to that level because of their zip code. So, who cares if a bunch of rich kids don't get the school of their choice. They will end up at another fancy school and get high paying jobs when they graduate.
It is not rich white kids who are passed over in favor of dumber minorites, it is smart Asian and white kids who are sometimes poorer than the minorities. It makes no sense to consider race. It is immoral and illegal what Yale is doing. The Ivies are digging their own graves. Their only avenue to admit dumber minorities will be to lower the standards for everyone. Check back in 10 years when Yale is equivalent to Quinnipiac.
The amount of ignorance on race is not surprising! I guess understanding the depths of American racism within its society from the outside looking in is akin to critiquing a 10,000 page book having only read its cover!!
When someone says they considered the color of one’s skin that usually is not speaking about their actual skin color, but rather the experiences and realities experienced from such skin color.
Example: when black people say they voted for Obama because he was black...that means they are voting for someone who share some of their experiences and views attributed from their black skin. No different than someone who votes for someone because they are republican. They’re voting for the potential of a shared political view, not just because of the WORD “republican”!
That’s also the significance behind when black people say a token black person isn’t black! Obviously, that person’s skin color is black but the experience or view described by that individual is not what is experienced and shared by the majority!!
And let’s be honest...qualifications are subjective to ones needs and the strengths and weakness of those qualifications vary based on each applicant. We see it all the time in the hiring of track and field coaches and the varying qualifications a program is looking for. Bringing in an Olympian as a coach, for example, maybe what some program believes will make an impact on some of their athletes who’s motivated by the dream to compete on a high level and having someone who has been there can better relate and motivate those particular athletes. Or the same program also hiring a coach whose coaching style has produced high level athletes could help other athletes who are motivated from that angle. The subjectivity of qualifications is a necessity because programs are diverse (hopefully). So qualifications could be based on other factors like gender, race, socioeconomics, age, etc. All of these factors brings a different experience into a complex program.
This is no different for universities seeking to have an institution in which education is sought from diverse angles! Someone might have had strong grades and are weaker in other areas. A university will have some students who are only about the books and nothing else, others who are about the books and campus engagement, and others whose energy and character is desirable on a campus (this is why some universities are big on video submission and/or live interviews during the application process).
So again saying someone was admitted only because of the color of their skin especially into an Ivy League institution is a misrepresentation of what the phrase actually means and of the many factors also considered and deemed necessary for admittance. Such a mischaracterization should not be painted so broadly on all applicants!

Those "dumber" minorities are still smarter than the people at Quinnipiac. Maybe yale being 70% asian, 25% white, and 5% hispanic/black would make it a better university than its current demographics. But I can tell you all those whites getting in today who would not in a colorblind world will not be happy.
Bad Wigins,
Indians, those from India the Hindu, Sikh etc are not very white. Some of them are light brown, like a dark Italian, but some of them are downright black-like.
Indians are Asians.
I think you are confusing classism and bribing for racist discriminatory policies. Yale appears to give affirmative action and race based priorities to black students the most, followed by latino. Whites second last and asians last.
I am not confusing anything. The schools being discussed are predominantly white, and as I posted above, at the most elite of them, Harvard, 43% of those white students are jocks, legacies or faculty brats. Now, if for some reason, you want to focus on the relatively small number of black students who attend these schools and ignore the fact that the greatest number and proportions of people who benefit from some form of affirmative action are the kids of rich and influential white people, go right ahead. I understand it probably makes you feel better about yourself.

Haha! Did I ever say it was illegal in my post? And the fact that anybody else could also “donate” their way in doesn’t change the fact that they’re still all white. There is an elite culture amongst those people. Not to say it’s bad, but they ARE taking opportunity from more qualified individuals who WOULD get in based entirely off of merit. Ever wonder why George W. Bush failed chemistry and still became President?? Not because he was more successful out of the the classroom, anyone can learn leadership skills, but because the opportunity of privilege plopped it into his lap.
Did you read my post? 50k on top of tuition is not light. If they are an especially affluent family it means that they may be big prospective donors. At one point at Duke, there were so many development cases that the administration worried for the university’s future. It happens more than you think. And any minority they took through affirmative action would easily be more qualified than many of the rich kids, who often had B averages, were mediocre at sports, and had a 1200 SAT. The only thing that got them in was the research facility or dormitory that had their last name on it.

Actually, some of those kids are really good squash players and are good at sailing as well. Jamal and Jose can't row no boats!
Ivies are NOTHING more than social programs that reinforce elite status for a few, mostly those born on third base.
BURN THEM ALL DOWN. They are toxic to a truly free and just society.
